well i'm going to traveling solo in India in June (via Bangladesh). I really doubt it could be THAT bad. If it was, why would there be so many solo travelers that go there?

I travelled alone, no problems. Met women traveliing alone, none of whom reported problems. India is safer than most Western countries, so I don't see why India deserves special concern when travelling alone.

I lived by myself (in Delhi) and traveled all over India alone. No problems. As a matter of fact, I was treated very well wherever I went.

Use the same common sense you would in any large city. Leave the jewelry, designer labels, and expensive cameras and accessories at home. Dress respectfully - by Indian standards. Keep in mind you don't have to respond to everyone who tries to talk to you. You'll be fine.

I've had better things to do that help a (now deceased) religious nutter let people suffer painful deaths in the name of faith. Still, whatever floats your boat, baby. Still, while the other kids at the hostel were doing that, I was playing cricket on the maidan, checking out a CPI(M)-led general strike or sipping a G&T at the Tollygunge club in memory of my dear old Grandpa who was a soldier there during WWII.

yes, that's precisely why I mentioned it... so that it might float somebody's boat. If you don't like it STFU and do as you did, make your own suggestions all of which are great.

I didn't do it in the name of religion (95% of those volunteering don't either). I did it because I think helping someone die with dignity is a good thing. You may disagree but then that's your problem and seeing as you never went there (I take it) your opinion of what takes place there is worth little if not nothing.

STFU yourself, if you knew anything about the woman and her ways and had half a brain, rather than being a naive little *beep* fresh out of undergrad, you wouldn't go within cooee of the place. Back in your box, gimp.

okay... so you've made it your life goal to diss MT... what the heck does that have to do with people from this forum going to help people with some friendship before they die

Don't get the connection. Perhaps my lack of life experience as you mentioned so forgive me for that. Maybe you'd better explain.

Hey, if you have problems with Catholics, go volunteer at Dr. Jack's place. Something tells me though that you're not much interested in helping people through their suffering.

Are you?

Nothing against Catholics, my dear sainted godmother is one as are many of my good friends. What I was banging on about is an NGO that receives massive funding by trading on its good name but basically lets people die in pain rather than giving them the appropriate medications to help with their pain.

ah okay now I see a bit more where you're coming from. Well I can attest personally that appropriate medications are given to them. By "appropriate" here I think you have to understand the context. A guy I treated had bedsores so bad you could see his pelvis clearly as the flesh was eaten away. Now, he had been brought off the street. He had a choice of dying in agony on the roadside or dying with pain medication on a bed with people who could mop his brow for the few days he had left. What he was given was appropriate when you consider that the possibility of a hospital room and hospital treatment was not available at all.

Do you have any personal experience of working there at all?

That article seems more interested in sneering than substance. The only specific criticism is that she was pro-life. Well there's a shocker. The rest of it is complaining about the Nobel Prize (not something she did), the motives of the Vatican (not something she did), the claim of a miracle (not something she did), and the fact that there are a lot of eponymous clinics (not substantive). I have no opinion on the matter, being neither religious nor an expert on Ms. Theresa, but that article is empty.

it was just to provide a reference for the guy's question. I suggested doing a google search, and that was one link that came up. I did not say it was the best, most complete answer.
