No. No one needs to smack down Bill Maher. And this -- an excerpt from his latest "New Rules" entry -- is why:
| Quote: |
And, indeed, the party that flatters itself that they protect America better is the party that has exhausted the military, left the ports wide open and purposefully outed a CIA agent, Valerie Plame.
That's not treason anymore? Outing a spy? Did I mention it was one of our spies? And how despicable that Bush's lackeys attempted to diminish this crime by belittling her service, like she was just some chick who hung around the CIA. "An intern, really. Groupie, if you want to be mean about it."
No. Big lie. Valerie Plame was the CIA's operational officer in charge of counter-proliferation. Which means she tracked loose nukes. So, when Bush said, as he once did, that his absolute, number-one priority was preventing terrorists from getting loose nukes, okay, that's what she worked on. That's what she devoted her life to, staying undercover for 20 years, maintaining two identities every goddamn day. This is extraordinary service to your country.
Valerie Plame was the kind of real-life secret agent George Bush dreams of being when he's not too busy pretending to be a cowboy or a fighter pilot.
CIA agents are troops. This was a military [character] assassination of one of our own, done through the press, ordered by Karl Rove. He said, of Valerie Plame, quote, "She's fair game." And then Cheney shot her.
George Bush likes to claim that he doesn't question his critics' patriotism, just their judgment. Well, let me be the first of your critics, Mr. President, to question your judgment and your patriotism. Because, let's not forget why they did it to her. Because Valerie Plame was married to this guy, Joe Wilson, who the Bush people hated because he busted them on one of their bullshit reasons for invading Iraq.
He was sent to the African country of Niger to see if Niger was selling nuclear fuel to Iraq. They weren't. It was bullshit, and he said so. In fact, his report was called, "Niger, Please!"
Valerie Plame's husband told the truth about their lie, so they were willing to jeopardize an entire network of spies to ruin her life. Wow, even the mob doesn't go after your family. |
Does Bill Maher go a little overboard sometimes in the interest of getting a laugh? Sure. But when he's not going overboard, he's dead-on right.
Someone once said to me that he listened to Rush Limbaugh because even a broken clock is right, twice a day. Bill Maher's clock is only broken maybe twice a day. I'll take those odds and weed out what I need to, without needing to smack him down. |

Cant Maher find new material? Valerie Plame? Seriously, yes it was a crime to out her but holy crap Bill, welcome to 2007. Theres a reason its called news, and not history.
P.S. I thought Mahr was a comedian....none of that was funny. Now, if he wants to define himself as a comedian, shouldnt he be funny? And if he cant be funny perhaps he should define himself as something else. Like a political analyst for example. Though if he is going to rehash the Valerie Plame story night in and noght out the historian might be a better term for him. Its certainly not current events.
In summary, maher is an unfunny idiot. |

You're right Jinju. Why should we be talking about a case of high treason committed by the office of the vice president when there is so much more important things going on i.e Anna Nicole Smith, Jon Benet Ramesy, lost boy scouts, Sanjai on American Idol, and poisoned pet food.
I wonder though, would your opinion be different if it had been a Cold War (no not the cold war going on in your head, the real Cold War) spy stealing secrets from the Soviets? I bet it would.
But you're right. Who gives a f*ck? They just committed treason to help circumvent an open discussion in Congress that eventually led to war. No big deal. |

Yes, they committed a crime and everybody knows it for chrissakes. Its a boring issue, time to move on. As I said, its fine to talk about it, just like its fine to talk about how the Spartans were betrayed by a Greek....but its not current events anymore, its not news, its history.
The real problem is though, that I read that thing 3 times. I didnt laugh once. Not even a smirk. Not even a smile. Isnt BOOOOOOOOOORING the last thing a comedian would want to be? |

This is so incredibly Orwellian I'm not sure what to say.

So what's the TF on Maher as compared to Jessica Alba? Now that we've got that out of the way, I have to say that it's wonderful to be told what is or is not funny by someone who has just one mediocre joke repeated ad nauseum. |

Why? This MAHER, as in the comedian guy on TV. This is not some Congressional investigation we are talking about. This is a guy who is supposed to be funny. On TV. For a bunch of left libs who wnt to feel smart. His words wont change a damn thing. Isnt his job to be funny and atleast kinda current? As I said, welcome to 2007, Bill. And its not as if there arent plenty of other horses to abuse. Just stop beating this one, its already dead.

The TF on Maher? he probably scores higher on it than Alba because atleast Alba can kinda, sorta pass for a biologcal chick. Can Maher and all his manly 98 lbs pass for a biologcal man? Why, he'd have to have balls wouldnt he.
To ba fair, I did that TF joke a while back and only do it now when I come across requests, like yours. |

I do not want to put words in gang ah jee's mouth (and please correct me, GAJ, if I am wrong), but I believe his point was that your view of what is history and what is news is Orwellian - in the 1984ish sense.
Peace |

What do you want to put in his mouth?
My view on history? When did this story break anyway? Its been so long I forgot. Seriously, Ive heard the Plame thing about a gazillion times right now. Hearing it again
a) wont change anything
b) America isnt going to rise up and call for impeachment just because Maher has gotten back on the subject AGAIN and AGAIN And Again and again and again and again and .....
c) ITS NOT FUNNY. Atleast not when done by Maher. |

I think you are missing the point of the article jinj.
The Plame Affair was not the argument; Maher wasn't questioning whether it happenned, the validity of the claims. There was a time in history (the "history" you keep referring to) when these things WERE the crux of the debate. There was a time when things were debated and discussed. That was about the same time when jokes were made by the jokesters. For the record, I have little doubt that Maher was making jokes about the Plame Affair back them.
Now, for better or worse it has been basically (and I use the phrase loosely) "agreed upon" that Bush outed a spy. Now that the public/news/pundits/ have this "fact" or "incident", it can be used as an example of something that Bush did wrong. See, past occurances can be used as a means of supporting an opinion of something; in this case, past actions by Bush can be used to describe Bush's character (or at least, his capability and culpability).
THAT is what Maher is making into a joke. He isn't making jokes about the Plame Affair, he's making jokes about Bush. Specifically, Maher is saying that Bush's (and his party's/crony's) patriotism is a joke.
The main thing that you should realize is that past events CAN (dare I say "should") be used when discussing the competency of that them there president.
Are you saying that you can only judge Bush based on what he is doing....RIGHT NOW!...? ....and right NOW! and RIGHT NOW!??? |

I doubt that....

Im not saying he did question anything. What I said was that he brough it up. For the bazillionth time. There comes a time when you tell the same joke over and over again, that not only does it lose the humor it becomes annoying. Hey, I wouldnt care much if Plame was mentioned in passing, but the whole damn thing is about Plame.

Jokes make peole laugh. I doubt this made anyone laugh.

Its not a joke when people dont laugh. Its just cynical angry shouting. Not funny.

The guy is a comedian. Am I the only one not missing this part? His job is to make people laugh, not yawn. I should say he is ONLY a comedian. Not really qualified to be a political analyst.

Im saying Maher is a one trick pony. Thats all. An unfunny one at that. He will be beating the Plame horse 15 years from now. |

And how is the Plame issue a dead issue? It is not. Those responsible have not yet been punished. IF and when impeachment begins, the Plame scandal will be an important part of it.
Your reasoning is absurd, nonsensical. |
