Just curious as to what people think about the Tony Snow cancer story and the religious side of it.

Bush says Snow is in his and Laura's prayers.

But I was thinking, since Snow is a christian, maybe this is his christian god punishing him for lying. I figure if god is responsible for so many singers winning Grammy Awards etc, surely this could be punishment for Snow's lying and obfuscating the truth as the press secretary, right?

Right. God is the god of Super Bowl champions, lottery winners, et al but he's never the god of miners who died in accidents, the firefighters who died in 9/11, et al. God certainly punishes people. He kills a lot of heathens in natural disasters. He brought AIDS to kill innocent babies. But he never kills Republicans.

My father has cancer, is he being punished for something? The guy has led a non-religous church for years and served God best he could. I believe God has something better that can come from this.

Some might be confused by these sympathetic comments re: a man suffering cancer. So here is the link to the story on Tony Snow's cancer that you two are using as a pretext to launch your [whatever you want to call the above posts]...

Thanks for showing us all that you're a low-class ass. Well done.

mother died of cancer. Grand father died of cancer. grand mother died of cancer. Cousin survived cancer. Why did my mother die? because she was a stupid smoker, who even on her dying day smoked. she bled to death from a tumour that had eaten through a major artery caused blood to go all over the room and soak a mattress.

None of this makes this question illegitimate or anything else.

Perfectly valid question and point to make.

If you can't see that, then clearly you're the one who has the problem, not me.

Ok then, so let's summarise the possible answers to your 'question'.

non-theist: Yes, prayer doesn't work.

theist: No, you don't understand how prayer works.

all: freethought is a douche.

Settled? Great.

As for Tony Snow, if you're going to use a stranger's personal tragedy to make a some kind of point, be it humorous, political or philosophical, at least try to do it well.

I would like to point out that religious wingnutters never fail to say the Goddess is punishing people for being immoral:

Katrina, Falwell said it was because the city was immoral.

HIV, many nutbars have said this was punishment for being gay, nevermind that most people who have HIV are women.

There are many more examples, so maybe she does punish immoral people.

I doubt it though.

I'll take being a 'douche' over a non-thinking retard like yourself any day of the week.

This is a valid point to raise against religion, and an especially valid point to raise against people who are a part of the Bush, neo-con, religi-con movement.

If you can't see that, than 'god' help you.

Asking a valid question doesn't make anyone a 'douche'. And to use that as your retort says a great deal.

Considering that, um, everybody dies, maybe god is punishing us all.

Freethought please don't do this.
Maybe your question is valid, but the way you phrased it and the current way people view you will only invite a feeding frenzy.

I'm with you against religion all the way. But there is a BIG difference between God and religion. Religion is a set of rules put in place with God leaves. That comprises about 95% of churches in the world. They follow the Bible, not God. Not at all saying the Bible isn't from God. But using the Bible for your own profit and not having a relationship with Jesus can be a deadly combination.

How people 'see me' right now? Frankly, I'm not even sure what that means? I had a bunch of twats accuse me of being anti-gay, which is an hilarious joke, and another person not know the proper racist term to describe Japanese people...

If that impacts how people 'see me', then the people on this board are dumber than I thought.
