I think your title stinks! The article isn't at all about "inherent immorality" and in any case, it is farcical to think that any population/people/culture are "inherently immoral". We are all the same in these inherent ways and it is the environment that determines much and which is the determining factor and what should be under discussion.
So I take exception to that title. But the article is a good read and asks a lot of good hard and poignant questions. I think if you change this ill subject title, more people might be inclined to take a look at it. I did so only because I thought it might be one of my fav. Boston Globe columnists.

You're probably right, but it was, after all, a question not a declarative statement, and I didn't say I thought that the answer was yes either.
Actually, I don't think Americans are any more evil than your average nation might be, but rather that they (the elites that decide the policies of that country, that is ) have inordinate power to do evil compared to the average world citizen.
You disagree with that? |

Don't put a statement that douchebaggy on DD. While he sounds like a douchebag sometimes, at least he recognizes a statement that is just a little too douchebaggy for him when he reads it.
Being a douchebag, you really should have realized the douchebagginess of that statement before you typed it. Considering that the elites of the United State do far more good than "evil" (God, that word is used too often by douchebags), why didn't you say that they have inordinate power to do good?
I think it's because no matter what would ever happen, you and your endless douchebaggy sources would come up with ways to call Americans and the American system "evil."
I don't know if you caught it or not, but I think you fit the description of a "douchebag." |

Plig,
You would have done much better using arguement, example and structure than just screaming. You sound like those you recently criticized and what we had a discussion on, in another thread. You only paint your own wagon shaddy brown.

R.S. I used to think of evil as quantifiable. I don't anymore and consider it like kindness; doesn't cost a nickle and can be done so easily......
Arendt, building on the concept of Dasein, being, was best at this conception of evil, the banality of evil. Meaning, evil isn't a big bald, torturer but rather a presence in us all, of which we all have access. On a political level it is a failure to think, to judge as a human. It is behind a desk and rationalizes events to suit "evil".
But at the end of the day, evil is everywhere and not something more or less....this is my arguement with 6 million and my arguement with Christ of one.... Bush is evil for what he doesn't think of. We all have the responsibility to "revere life" and without this safe guard of thought against action -- everything breaks into evil.

No. Part of the standard allegation-driven discourse you peddle here. Standard leftist rhetoric, R.S. Refugee. You repeat it as a mindless drone.

I have also heard the "allegation" that America fields the largest military in the world.
This is a secret? You have uncovered something?
We live in a world of power politics and hegemons. If there is going to be one, I would prefer we play that role. I would also prefer creating a balance-of-power system but that is another issue. But, again, and especially given Western Europe's shining example as hegemon between 1500-1945, and Japan's attempt at regional hegemony as well, I would prefer that we play this role.
In any case, I reject your allegation that because America possesses "inordinate power" that this in-and-of-itself represents and proves malicious intentions.
"Look! He's got a gun!!!"-style hysteria. Stupid, R.S. Refugee. Again, if you are so convinced that America represents "evil" and is irredeemably corrupt, and if you are the American citizen you claim to be, then you have a clear path of action in front of you, I think. And McVeigh as a role model.
Why not embark on it? You talk the talk. Why not walk the walk? |

Excellent point.
However, I feel confident that he isn't an American citizen. Also, he seems to me to be the "writhing in hatred and talking alot" type, not the "do something about it" type. |

That could apply to just about any tree hugger/leftist/Chicken Little-the-sky-is-falling-gobal-warming person on this forums. |

Or how about the wardrum beaters who have never and will never serve, while we are naming this prestigious club of talkers...?
Let us recap:
(1) America is a police state and shows no redeeming qualities...but I will do little more than preach about this on an anonymous chatboard. One day, though, I really hope to be like the French Resistance or something else I saw on television -- maybe even V, The Running Man, or The Matrix. Yeah, I want to be "Neo."
(2) The world is ending via the imminent, capitalist-produced environmental catastrophe. It is upon us, I say! But I am not even going to turn off my computer let alone modify my own consumerism in any way while I scream this thesis on this chatboard and while I drink beverages cooled by refrigerators, thank you very much. Go Al Gore!
(3) War is good. Get 'em! Kill the enemy! (Just keep me out of it. May I write online Op-Eds for the Army Times?)

I guess you missed 1 and 2 on that list. What do you think about stringing them up? I'm all for that. |
