My school just put a figure in front of me, 205,500W, for Employment Insurance. (0.45 % of my salary May 2006 - Dec 2007).

1. they are asking me to pay it retrospectively, ie. for last year. (who pays for insurance for the past???)

and

2. advance for this year until Dec.

I used the search function and as far as I could see it seems voluntary for an E-2 visa holder, like myself. More so, I don't want it.

Can anybody point me towards a source I can show my employer to prove it isn't compulsory, as they are saying.

Never heard of employment insurance. Do you mean health insurance? employment (income) tax?

If your job breaks or gets stolen, will they buy you a new one?

Well, first of all, it's not in your contract, right??

I got asked at the start of this year if I wanted "Employment insurance" and I said "No" -- what do I need it for? And going by that, you can see it is NOT compulsory.

Unless you're making a whole lot more money than anyone else here, I would guess 205,500 is 4.5%, not .45%. Either way, it's BS.

No that's right because that's over 20 months..I just did some calculations.

0.45 % x 2,283,333 (my av. pay over those months) = 10,275 W a month

therefore 10,275 x 20 = 205,500

That's doesn't matter anyway because I won't be paying it Smile

That's exactly right no job = no visa so I can't ever get unemployment benefits in Korea. I can point them towards the Ministry of Labor.

retroactively - i learnt ( refreshed from the depths of my brain) a new word today thanks.

That's just stupid if you're on a year visa.

If they were trying to screw you out of money then there must be other employees there that they're doing this to and thinking of making a bundle. I don't know. Maybe any money they can screw you out of is icing on the cake for them.

And what's this "pay in advance" shiat? Tell 'em to go screw themselves. Bunch of arseholes.
