Hi everyone
I'm leaving my current job and have to give back my current cellphone to my school (they provided it in the first place) and obviously need to get a new one. Now I've asked about this alot but its difficult to get a straight answer so here goes:
- Is it better to get a contract or pre paid; I imagine its like home where contract is much cheaper but I've heard that I can only get one if I have a credit card out here which I don't.
- If I buy a used cell phone (e.g. off a foreigner who is leaving etc) will it automatically accept pre-paid cards or does it have to be programmed? IF so is it an easy process?
- Lastly whats a good price to pay for your average used cellphone? I know this depends on the person but I don't need a fancy piece of kit for a year, just something with English that works properly.
Any help/advice is greatly appreciated - thanks in advance |

To be sure of an English menu you should get an Anycall phone by Samsung.
You can ask your new employer or any Korean friend to set up a contract for you.
Depending on the model, used phones should be 60-100,000. |

You can get a prepay type phone by walking into any cell phone shop and buying it. You will need your passport (I assume you no longer have a valid ARC).
Ask for used ones. A decent one that is about a year old can be had from 30k won in a shop. You can re-load the phone at just about any shop during regular business hours. It will be in your name so you can make changes or update/upgrade without problem in the future (which is often not the case if you buy one from someone who is leaving).
If you get a phone card (for long distance) you just dial the local toll free number and follow directions to make your calls. |

A couple weeks ago, I got a Korean friend to help me get a contract phone. She put it in her name, as I had not recieved my ARC yet. Now that I have recieved my ARC, will transfer the contract into my name.
I got a new LG phone for free, 30 000 won activation fee, 34 500 won monthly fee that includes 230 weekday minutes, 430 weekend minutes, and 100 free texts (texts free for the first month only). These are all based on outgoing calls/ texts, all incoming are free. Going back to the shop with my friend to re-negotiate the options of the contract (monthly texts/ internet usage/ etc) next week. |
