I'm looking to get a new Hard Drive for my notebook computer, and was shocked to find that a year and a half after I bought it, there is absolutely no change in Notebook HD capacities...and the prices are virtually unchanged from 18 months ago, when according to Moore's law, things should have at least doubled in capacity/been halved in price. Not happening. Still can't find a 7200 SATA over 160GB, but almost nowhere carries said drives, likely 120GB 5400, or crappy slow 200GB's @ 4200RPM.

What the hell? ...while at the same time, desktop 500GB are like $140 or maybe less.

...add to that Danawa in Korea doesn't carry smack for notebook drives...anyone know a place in korea to get a notebook drive?

I supplement my laptop storage with a USB HD enclosure, presently 320GB/7200RPM/16MB. I paid $20 stateside for the Enclosure was using an old 20GB EIDE drive just upgraded with the 320GB.

You may be able to find a SATA enclosure.

Sager 5720.

http://www.powernotebooks.com/specs/Sager/5720specs.php

I'd even consider a portable HD, USB connect, so's I can detach it if I take it out with me.

The notebook hard drives are a prime example of the physical limitations of solid state magnetic storage.

I wouldn't be surprised if they pass the 200GB barrier on notebook drives in a few months.

However, most companies are investing money on FLASH notebook hard drives. There are already a couple models out there but those are really expensive since they are for the early adopter/corporate customers.

That's why I think I'll go with a plug-n-play USB drive. Problem is, on Danawa, I can't make out where they are. There doesn't seem to be the options for portable/USB HDD's in the dropdown boxes...

Well, this isn't Danawa, but, hope it helps:

under computer/game, first column, on the bottom, you'll see USB memori (in Korean). Click on 2gig. Then, you will be brought to a screen that shows you everything from 512 up to 4gig (there is a 4 gig for 33,000WON).

Thasks for the site--I just clicked on the "English Shopping" to see all in English. However, I want an USB External HDD, like 400+GB or so, not a few Gig's flash memory.

Danawa has a buttload of external drives. Go to the F/HDD tab, then when you get that, you will see the pull-down menus. On top row, far left, pull down to you get HDD (외장형). That will list all of the external drives. Then you can select your capacity, size, speed, brand, etc. from the other menus.

Done! Happy Shopping.

KPRROK

PS - After looking at the list, there aren't a lot of good choices. Mainly no-brand. You're probably better off just buying an internal drive with a case and hooking it up yourself. Just search for 외장형 and you should see the cases you can choose from.

Ah, so the F/HDD is the external. Thanks. But yeah, the selection is shockingly bland. Can you use internal drives as a secondary HDD though? How would the connection be if I did that?

I recently bought a 500Gb HD and put it in an enclosure. I bought it from Technomart, it cost 220k.

It connects via usb.

Just go there, or Yongsan, and start asking. I had to put them together, but it is simple, the enclosure even came with a screwdriver.

Then you will have to initialise and format it, but that is a fairly simple task, with how to guides with screenshots laying all over the internet. It does take a bit of time for a 500Gb drive though, but you can do whatever you want while it churns away.
