I think you should research "Iran" and "rescue missions."

I completely 100% agree with this. Iran's young people are no different than young people from the west. They like the same things and are very westerniz..... modernized. In 20 years, these people will control the country and I think there will be a huge change in politics.

Sorry Aj, you are simply dreaming here.

Blair promised a "tougher stance" should present diplomatic strategies not achieve their release, but I wonder whether military action is out of the question too.

If the Americans can't even control Baghdad, the Brits have got no chance against the Iranians, it would appear.

This isnt quite true. The Americans are trying to control Baghdad - i.e. keep it in as big a piece as possible. If they wanted to, Baghdad and Iraq could be one big smoking pile of rubble in a week, or less. Same with Iran - i.e. Iran could be reduced to a big smoking pile of rubble in under a month. Let's not make Iran into what it isn't - a credible power to be feared. The only thing stopping the Americans from doing what they should do to Iraq, and also Iran, is world opinion. Hopefully world opinion swings a bit more towards the reasonable after this illegal seizure of English soldiers.

So, in summation:

overthrowing Iran's government and trying to contain the country by gentle methods would be hard

destroying Iran would not.

The real problem is that Iran has the very real ability to project her power into the UK. You can bomb the hell out of Iran with no intention of bringing democracy to the masses, but the London Metro will burn as well. I don't think that the UK would be willing to fight a state that can fight back. (nor are most Americans, to be fair)

"In Israel and the west Iran is seen as a religious extremist country controlled by Ayatollahs but it seems reality is different.
Many young Iranians lead secular lives. A young Tehran-based computer technician and DJ told Ynet of parties he organizes in the capital, where young Iranians are drawn to the tunes of western music, drugs and alcohol."

http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2005-02-28-iran-pink_x.htm

"Yet, the country has changed in ways that have contradicted the Islamic tenets on which the revolution was based. For every weblog shut down, two more seem to emerge. New, reform-leaning newspapers regularly challenge government policies. Reformist politicians are hoping for a comeback. And in a society where more than half the population is under the age of 30, young Iranians are staging a non-violent but potent counterrevolution not only through fashion, but also with their music and relations between the sexes that defy the strict Islamism dictated by the ruling mullahs"

Sounds like the youngsters in Iran may not be as fanatical in their Islamic practices as we have been led to believe.
