Our hagwon changed owners mid last year, and we've read some others posts suggesting that we should have signed a new contract with the new owner.

However, we were not even informed of the change of ownership at the time.

Does this leave us vulnerable with regards to our severence pay, return airfare etc? What is the reponsibilty of the hagwon to inform us of the change of ownership?

It also leaves you in hot water with immi. Your VISA is sponsored by your previous owner. If the school changes ownership, your VISA needs to be transferred.

Also, your new owner is not responsible for previous contracts, yours included. That's one way owners put the screws to the whitey. Good luck. Make sure you get everything, or leave a substantial amount of damage to make up for it. Just kidding, don't do that!

Call your area immigration office and check your status. Also, check with labor about your rights. It could become an ugly situation, through no fault of your own.

You are working illegally. You should have signed new contracts and had your E2 changed to the new owner. Smile

Yes, this happened to me earlier with a change in hogwan ownership. They did resubmit the contract to immigration under the new ownership, but they wanted to change the dates on my contract to only indicate that it was for 4 months (when they took over, to when I am scheduled to leave). I had to fight them on that.

you MUST go to immi and sort it out ASAP - i was in this situation a couple of years ago and my boss had to pay a big fine and risked having his ability to make visas revoked. you wont have to pay anything however, but your boss might try and stiff you into paying so be careful

We've left it a little late now - we finish in one or two weeks.

We think the principal is a trustworthy guy, and won't try to do anything underhand.

Thanks for the advice.
