Can someone fill me in on how I switch my Canadian Drivers licence to a Korean one? How much is it? What do I need to bring? Where do I need to go? (if there are any in Gongju or Daejon, that would be great)

I don't know about Gongju and Daejeon, but there's definitely one in Yesan.

I got mine in dec 2005. At that time, it cost 7000 won (i think). It required you to bring in 2 photos, your home DL, passport, and ARC and of course 7000 won. They do some health check on you, which only required jumping in one foot and reading camoflague numbers from some book. Bring a Korean speaker with you (much easier).

From what I hear, now they take your home DL away from you. When I got mine, they let me keep mine.

Or you could get an International Drivers License from your home country and avoid changing it altogether.

Now the DL Dept. will keep your foreign DL until you leave Korea when you exchange your Korean DL and receive your home country DL.

FYI , if you have an ARC it is illegal to drive on an Int'l. DL. Most of the time the police do nothing but if they want you can have alot of trouble if you drive illegally in Korea.

Wow, that's news to me. Where did you get that info and what are the punishments?

Similar to home.... if you change residential jurisdictions you have 90 days to update / change your D/L.

If you are here with a work visa you have 90 days to change your IDP to or get a Korean D/L.

Yes, they do keep your license from home now. They will exchange them when you leave Korea. I got my Korean license last year and it was ridiculously easy to do. I had to take a written test and pass some physical exam (basically an eye test). If you have any common sense whatsoever you can pass the written test the first time. The only tricky questions are the ones related to points that you might acquire on your license for infractions. Either way, it was easy to me.

Seems kinda pointless. (1) I don't trust I will ever see my home license ever again (2) I'll just get another one anyway when I renew my license back home.

But IDLs are only good for a year and need to be renewed. Better off getting a Korean license.

True, true, but for $10 AAA in the USA will do it thru the mail. I think they will send it to your home address, so you'll need a buddy or relative to receive and mail it.

No one has answered my other question yet: What is the penalty for an ARC holding resident driving a motorcycle on a foreingn license with an International Drivers License?

Will I be able to use my Thai driving license rather than losing my UK one to a government office forever and a day?

If you visit your home country on vacation and plan to return to Korean to finish your contract, do they allow you to 'borrow' you license to go home?

I find the concept of them holding on to your home country's liscense kinda weird!!
