Get ready for your health insurance withholding to take a major jump. The old rates oft quoted on Dave's: 2.24% and recently 2.38% are gone.

Your new rate for your share should be approximately 3.36%

The government health insurance rates have taken a jump. The new bills on their way to your school show the new rate. So, you should see a jump in your withholding soon, if you haven't seen it already.

This is about a 50% increase in the insurance cost.

Insurance rates had already begun creeping up earlier. Now this big jump. Your school might also be paying either monthly or every 3 months depending upon how you are enrolled in the plan. This could affect when you are impacted and by how much.

Remember, your insurance is NOT a straight percentage of your pay. It is actually based on brackets. Your percentage rate could be higher or lower depending on where you fall in the bracket.

Should this lower my withholding?

Sorry if you're confused Ying.

The won amount you are paying should increase by about 50%

The actual amount is not a percentage. It is based on brackets. They look up your reported pay level and charge the amount indicated for your pay bracket.

This amount is 3.36% of the midpoint of the bracket.

If your pay is higher than the midpoint, your actual percentage rate will be slightly lower than 3.36%.

If your pay is lower than the midpoint, your actual percentage rate will be slightly higher than 3.36%.

Either way, the amount you pay should go UP.

I'm not confused. I should have said, "withholding tax". Does the increase in health insurance cost increase my deductibles? I believe one of the reasons why our income taxes are so low is because we can claim pension and health. If so, wouldn't they have to change that "check your monthly withholding tax" on NTS's website?

I totally understand how much my health insurance will be going up. Mine goes up close to 30,000 more. Jesus H. I'm so disconnected from news here. Didn't they have an election? Or is that coming up? Does that have anything to do with this increase. Seems sort of drastic a rise. I wonder how this is justified? Why don't they just increase it to 20%. I've never used my insurance. Is it really that good? Maybe I should use it to it's full potential and screw the bejesus out of them and get MY money's worth.

Seems rather expensive. 100K. Big differene.

Did they increase the benefits?

How the hell can they just change it all the time? Shouldn't they give an advance warning? You know? Like "Next year, health insurance will be blah, blah, blah" instead of "Oh. Tomorrow health insurance goes up again. Stayed tuned for further increases." Like watching the stock market or something. "What's my health insurance costing nowadays. Hmm. Let me check the newspaper."

Christ.

I'm going to make a trip there and see what's going on. I don't get any information and their website is probably not updated. I'd venture to say that if I called them, the customer service agent would have no idea what I'm talking about. "Oh no. Your health insurance is 2.24%" I'll bet you anything. Seems to me that's what they said it was when I called them last month when I knew damn well that it had increased in January.

Did you get your information at work or in the mail?

Here, I just copied the whole thing from NHIC so you could see the date they posted this. As you can see the rates are the same ,but they "Abolished" the grade scaling system(Grade1-Grade100).

I had a hagwon (Bambini) ask us to sign contracts saying we were paid 1.2 million won per month, so they could get cheaper health insurance. It would have saved them a ton if I had.

I said no way.

I think they forged my signature and still got the lower rate.

That's the second last increase. ontheway is informing us that there is yet another increase in health insurance.

I, however, don't understand how it could be effective immediately. Maybe next January.

The increase was on the bills we recieved yesterday, must be for May 2007. According to the wonjangnim this has been a recent issue on the Korean news. The health insurance coverage has been expanded to cover some things that previously had not been covered, such as MRIs and for increased cancer coverage and costs.

Still seems strange. How can they just up and change it anytime they like? Something's fishy about that department.

What's the effective date? "Must be for May" doesn't really clear things up. If it's for may, why is it on his April bill?

Right, I kind of got that when I posted, but it's all just too fked up. Increase it in January. Increase it in May. Where does it stop? Is it just a free for all system? Weird.

ontheway,

Do you get a statement from the health department? If not, can you? I called them a couple of months ago just to check that everything was being paid. They had me on file (I have the booklet, too) and the customer service buddy had to call me back with how much had been contributed so far. He could have been just talking bullshit and figuring out how much my boss should have paid to date. My request seemed unusual to him, I think.

I'd like to get statements, but I don't. Guess I'll ask my boss.
