But I ask you...so what are YOU (and the other doom-criers) doing to save the environment? Even though I doubt it I still take public transport to work, I don't use hairspray, I don't have A/C in my apartment, I haven't been on a plane since 2004.... I would wager my carbon footprint is a LOT less than many so-called "green" supporters.

Ah, another tu quoque - we should start calling this move the 'Al Gore fallacy'. In any case, I don't think any of us here have been arguing for any specific courses of action, just that the situation be acknowledged.

Urby, did you have your own garden and a self-made solar oven? I did, when I had the space and proper location. Etc.

Just a little reminder to you "Chicken Little!!" yellers. While you like to claim the people concerned about GW are hysterical, keep in mind the report that came out was:

Chicken Little? Hardly.

Quote:
'The really chilling thing about the IPCC report is that it is the work of several thousand climate experts who have widely differing views about how greenhouse gases will have their effect. Some think they will have a major impact, others a lesser role. Each paragraph of this report was therefore argued over and scrutinised intensely. Only points that were considered indisputable survived this process. This is a very conservative document - that's what makes it so scary,' said one senior UK climate expert.

I have explained this repeatedly on this and other threads. Perhaps the skeptics on the speed of change will pay attention to some scientists:

Seas Could Rise Dramatically in Rapid Ice Melt

Quote:
Something is missing from the estimates of future sea level rise in the recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change: the potentially catastrophic impact of a rapid melt of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets....

The IPCC does not include dynamic processes where the ice flows rather than melts, said Michael Oppenheimer, a geoscientist at Princeton University. The bottom line is that the ice sheets are a big threat.

...The IPCC report estimates that sea level will increase between seven inches and two feet by the year 2100.

Ice sheet flow was omitted from the report despite recent observations of the thinning of ice shelves and streams because some scientists are concerned that these are transient effects, not necessarily due to global warming, according to Jonathan Gregory....

Ice movement was incorporated into the models of a study published this January in the journal Science by Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany. His team projects a sea level rise between twenty inches and four and a half feet by the end of the 21st century. This is faster than the current IPCC predictions. Furthermore, a recent review by Rahmstorf and colleagues demonstrates that sea level rise has been following the upper limits of previous predictionssuch as those from the 2001 IPCC report.

...The last time the earth was as warm as it will get this century, the sea level was four to six meters [or 12 to 18 feet] higher. That was 125,000 years ago. At that point in earths history, of course, there werent billions of human beings living on the earths coasts...

I have rediscovered Weart's excellent overview of the development of Global Warming science. You can find it here:

The Discovery of Global Warming

There are .zip or .pdf files of the site you can download.

I'll tell you what, Gopher. If your offer is truly in good faith, then why not begin by presenting your evidence? Backing up the speculations of bias, corruption and intellectual malfeasance that you've been making about the majority of the world's climate scientists would be a real start.

After all, weren't you the one who was calling it cowardly to question the academic integrity of others anonymously over the internet?

GAJ,

My first interactions with gopher on this board were, I believe, related to the School of the Americas. I went through a lengthy post of his and found most of the info was irrelevant to the topic. So, I simply stated, "Irrelevant." below those sections. Other sections were more fully discussed. Now, this was in no way a insult, but he immediately attacked. More than once. I tried for months to pacify the little baby and got the same crap he's saying above. Trust me, it's bullshit. He'll insult you again just as soon as you disagree with him. Guaranteed.
