|

The veggie club's April get-together will be another barbecue, like the one we had on Namsan last fall. It might be on Namsan again, or we could go to the Seoul Forest or some other place. If you have a suggestion, please make it! |

I noticed some nice spots around Seoul Racecourse Park (including a waterfall...) but I didn't notice anyone cooking outdoors. They're also having a Spring festival there. I'll look into it more closely next weekend (probably between races...) I'll also scout out Seoul Grand Park - at the next subway station on the light-blue line (#4...)
I volunteer to buy all the food, and attendees can donate whatever they want (5000 or 10,000 won - or whatever they can afford ...)
All proceeds could then go to one of the animal shelters in memory of Summer Chambers (who came to last year's cookout...) |

A vegetarian BBQ? That's an oxymoron. |

Technically, if food is cooked on a rack (or spit) over a source of heat (preferably wood or charcoal...) it can be termed "barbecued"...
Textured vegetable protein and tofu can also be marinated.
I concocted a "veggie burger" recipe using (overcooked) brown rice, sesame seeds, almond butter, shredded vegetables, chick pea flour, and spices that was pretty good last time. We also had "veggie hot dogs", "chicken", and "ham" (made by "Vegelove" company...) as well as grilled vegetables.
And we also had some beer (which might be a problem at my suggested Seoul Racecourse Park site - I don't think that alcohol is allowed there ...)
I think I'd like to try for veggie "shish kebabs" this time ...
Any good vegetarian cooks out there are encouraged to come up with further suggestions, and we can always use some help.
This will also be "Hater Depot's" last gig as Seoul Veggie Club president (since he said that he's leaving Korea...) so it should be a big special event... |

Will there be hummus??
I love hummus. Especially the cracked red pepper or the 40 spices. |

That's a good idea - I can do pita hummus wraps ... (Will probably have to be homemade hummus, though, unless Costco starts carrying it here ...) |

I'm not a vegetarian, but I have a few vegetarian friends and I got to say, some of the food is delicious. I'm one of those guys that always has to have some sort of meat with a meal. I even cringed at the thought of veggie burgers on a grill until a friend of mine made one for me. It was unbelievable. I don't know how they did it, but they actually had it moist and juicy when you bit into it. Then I had the portabella mushroom cap burger and I bit into a slice of heaven. |

I got almond butter at the Shinsegae (probably misspelled...) department store supermarket at the Express Bus station (Orange line 3, station 339...) It was near the end of an aisle, and they also had cashew butter.
Adjacent to the supermarket area is their "Well Being" /health food section which, for the most part, is way too expensive - at least double or triple what the same products would cost in the U.S. (maybe the "Free Trade Agreement will help ...)
Most people who have attended these gatherings aren't strict vegetarians. Many of the vegetarian restaurants that we've gone to around Seoul use simulated meat items, and their texture and taste is usually very good. (I also like the traditional Korean vegetarian food served at places like the Sanchon in Insa dong - there's a lot of variety, and it's fun to eat...)
I'll put portabella mushrooms on my shopping list ... |

Oh mi gawd you are going to barbeque vegatarians. Isn't that illegal? Yes, I AM ashamed of that comment but we all know it had to be said. Apologies to all vegatarians.

You don't have to be vegetarian - if you come, we'll be happy to marinate you and throw you on the grill ... |
