I love playing Scattegories with my advanced students. We always have a blast, and my students are amazingly creative. But the problem is, I'm running out of good category ideas. The weirder the better, because it's more fun and they're forced to think outside of the box. We've already covered the basics: food, countries, three letter words, sports, weather. Now we do significantly odder categories, with significantly odder results. I've had students try to pass off "Grim" as an English girl's name starting with G, "Apartment 3-G" as a horrible name for a baby starting with A, and "National Geographic watching" as a sport starting with N.

Here are my favorite categories so far:
Things you can put on your head
Things you throw away
Excuses for not doing homework
Bad jobs
Horrible names for a baby
Bad Valentine's Day presents

Can you help me think of any others?

Lots of great categories.......

I play the traditional way, getting students to write as many responses as possible within a time limit. They then state a response, get a point and the next group and so on. ..... If they repeat an already stated response, -2 points. Forces them to listen .........

Can I ask which ways you play, especially with a larger class?

The Top 5 game I designed is along the same lines and very popular. It's in my powerpoint games folder. Different levels / kinds . I'll have to design a new one based on some of these categories! It's now on my to do list......

None of my classes are very large, but I play two variations.

For classes around the 6-7 mark, I have each student write one answer for each category. If their answer is the same as another student, or I otherwise deem it as an answer that doesn't really fit the category, they must cross it off. Every answer that is suitable and not duplicated, they get one point. I play 6 topics per round. Whoever has the most points at the end of the class wins.

With anything bigger than that, I divide into teams of two or three, and each team can think of as many answers for each category as they can in the time limit. With this method, I usually play 4 topics per round. The teams go back and forth, again, getting one point for each answer that is not the same as the other teams, but this time -1 for dupes.

The first time you play this game with a class, there will be some confusion for the first round, lots of talk between groups, and therefore lots of duplicate answers. But after one round, they'll pick up on how creative they have to be, and will come up with some truly interesting answers.

This is a great idea. If you haven't done it yet, try playing Taboo. It's also good for getting them to think outside the box.

I play a variation for large classes with small teams of three or four students. One student (it rotates within the team) stands and says a sentence that relates to the category. Example category: colors. A student from the first team says "My book is yellow." A student from the next group says "My coat is blue." And so on until one team repeats a color that has already been used. When that happens, the team that first used the color gets the point.
I number the students within each group and will start each new category by announcing which student has to stand up and play. "All number (twos) stand up." Next category, "All number threes stand up." Of course, other students in the group can help the student who is standing.

At the job I recently quit, I played Scattegories from time to time with most students. The category that always stumped them was Countries. You'd think it would be fairly easy to think of a country starting with S, for example, and, no, Seoul is not a country.

I had a class complain that I always won because English is my native language, so on my last day of teaching I played a couple rounds in Korean. They still lost !mwahaha!

What kind of results have people had playing this with elementary students, and large classes?

It works well with large classes, but you have to put them in groups. I've found that the kids are so competitive about keeping their answers secret that it doesn't get too loud.

For my classes, the middle school students do best with the game. It works okay with elementary too, but you have to keep the categories a little more simple.

I played with game with an afterschool class. It only has 15 students so splitting them up was easy. My problem was that ONE student was a much higher level than the other students, so his team almost always won...

I'm halfway tempted to make him play by himself against the other students...

Great ideas oneofthesarahs...I might give this game another try with some of your categories (and the other respondents') a try!

I found this list on the internet

1. Something you shop for
2. Something you use in the summer time..............
3. Celebrity.....................................
4. Boy names.....................
5. Things you find at a school...............
6. Something you cook...........................
7. Something that smells........................
8. Song ............................
9. Something a kids says.................
10. TV show..................
