Has anyone been to the "massive retrospective" of Andy Warhol at the Samsung Arts Center in Leeum? Is it any good? Is he the most over rated artist of the 20th century?

One off those crowd gathering exhibitions.................
I went to the rothko exhibition there which was frankly lamentable.old stuff in poor condition.It had been in Hong Kong previous.
Interesting Korean video work in the main entrance though was a tank of water with a camera slowly moving up to steady it.I can't remember who did it,but,i took that away with me.
Haven't been to Gwacheon for an age but there was a work by So Du Oh(?),2 faded portraits facing each over over 10m that was interesting at the time. |

I haven't seen this particular exhibition, but I've seen a fair bit of Warhol stuff over the last few years. After thinking for a long time that he was indeed very over-rated, I've decided that he is actually pretty damn good. I'd thought he was kinda boring mostly because I'd seen his stuff only in books. Seen big, as was intended, the old soup cans and Marilyns and Maos and whatnot are actually pretty impressive, I thought.
In Vancouver a while ago I saw an exhibition of his drawings, too, and that was great. He was a good draw-er, old Andy was...
Over-rated? Yeah, maybe. But still, worth checking the stuff out. |

The quality of the Magritte exhibition was excellent. They had a lot of his iconic works. This was my first museum trip in Seoul. Anywhere in Korea, as a matter of fact. |

Warhol embraced boredom,which in itself was interesting at the time.
At the time,at New York parties,artists engaged in lifes struggles(tragedy,ecstacy,doom) saw him as scum. |

| So does anyone have any specific information about the exhibit? Place, time, run time, cost... Anything? The website doesn't work in Mozilla or in IE (without installing an Activex). |

If you get the Internatl Herald Tribune on Thursdays, the JoongAng Daily insert lists all the cultural activities taking place for the next week: concerts, exhibits, tours, theater, etc.
To June 10: "Andy Warhol Factory." As this year marks the 20th anniversary of A.W.'s death in 1987, numerous exhibitions of Warhol's works are taking place worldwide. At Leeum, the 198-painting exhibition will feature masterpieces of pop art such as the famed Campbell's soup cans and the portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Chairman Mao. Eight films directed by Warhol are included as a special feature. There are also continuous showings of an acclaimed documentary about Warhol's life.
The museum is open Tuesdays to Sundays, 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and until 9 p.m. on Thursdays. Closed Mondays. Entrance fee is 7000 won for adults, 4000 won for those between 7 and 18, and kids under 7 free

I went last month and I recommend it. There are two floors of his stuff including his most famous pieces. You can also see his video portraits of famous movie stars. There's a documentary playing too, in English (very low volume) with Korean subtitles.
It's on until June. Was about 15,000 or 20,000.
The website doesn't work in Firefox, only IE. Just another pretty example of a Korean website that refuses to follow web standards.
