In this thread Rocklee asked who's using Vista.
Take the poll and reply if you've got something to say about it.
Here's My Response

not for the foreseeable future. My new computer is postponed until late fall, but realistically December or first week january and the current one can't run vista.
when I get the new computer I'm not planning on going Vista. I'm going to stick with XP until it is no longer supported with updates. |

I'm going to stick with XP until I:
1. Upgrade to a new machine, and can get Vista cheaper. (maybe 2 years)
2. Get an included copy of Vista on a new machine.
3. Can't update XP anymore.
I don't see anything in Vista that is worth upgrading for. |

I am running Vista Home Premium on my new (~3 month old) Dell laptop. I had no choice in the matter, as XP was not an option. Here is a basic rundown of my lappy:
Intel C2D Centrino T5500 (1.66 ghz/ 667 fsb)
2x1 gig ram (533 fsb)
Intel GMA950 integrated graphics (up to 224 mb shared video)
80gb 5400rpm hdd/ bluetooth/ wireless/ 5in1 card reader/ 14.1" widescreen (1440x900)
Vista seems to be okay. Not really a big difference from XP overall, but alot more streamlined, which would be nice for those that are not well versed in computing. Vista is indeed a ram hog, with just a few IE windows/ messenger open, ram usage usually around 35-40%. I do run the Aero desktop, and kinda like the sidebar gadgets (currently using clock/ calendar/ weather/ cpu and ram monitor/ calculator). Haven't had too many software compatability issues, although my *questionable* copy of Office 2003 wouldnt install, so I *aquired* a copy of Office 2007. Had to switch my antivirus from AntiVir (which had no Vista support when I got this lappy) to Avast!, but it seems to be quite effective. Nero/ Itunes/ BT client all run fine. Am able to play HL2 and FarCry at low settings, which makes me happy. I am sure that I could gut my pre-configured Dell install of Vista, but I cant really be bothered at this point, will wait for when I really need to reformat. |

| I will be with XP until DX10 forces a change. I estimate about a year will go by yet before DX10 games become popular. Maybe even more... |

Between work and home I have something like 10 computers. Vista is on one of them and I like it so far. It's very good-looking.
Most of my heavy work is done on a win2000 machine. I've been meaning to upgrade it but to be honest I can't afford the downtime.
At home it's all pirated xp.
I also have a mac, but I find it hard to get used to and don't use it much.
Tried Ubuntu this morning on a machine and I quite liked it. It would probably be great for a home user who wanted a lot of stuff for free and had time to tweak. |

| I bought a new desktop with Vista Home Premium and its a drastic improvement over my nearly 5 year old laptop. However is seems to me that the improvement is almost entirely due to the hardware upgrade and vista really doesn't amount to much of an improvement that I can see. I've heard that its supposed to be more secure, but I'll have to take their word for it. I've also heard that those upgrading to Vista have had a lot more problems than those buying it on a new computer. I've had a few minor problems, but nothing that couldn't be easily fixed. The USB drivers for my videocamera didn't work and Panasonic can't be bothered to supply new ones, so I had to to buy a 4pin to 6 pin firewire cable which is better anyway I guess. The USB speakerphone from my old computer didn't work, but I would have had to buy new speakers anyway. There was one other driver problem but the fix was on Dell's website. That's about it. DRM should pretty much be a non-issue for me I think because I don't download music or videos etc. Overall I'd say there's not much to get excited about in Vista and I really don't see much of a reason to upgrade unless you're buying a new computer anyway . Basically though I think its OK. |
