Apr. 16, 2007 At least 29 people are dead in what may be the biggest mass killing on a college campus in American history and the death toll may rise.
Police at Virginia Tech, in Blaksburg, Va., said that the shootings happened at a dormitory and a classroom on opposite sides of the university campus.
Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said that one person was killed in the first shooting, which occurred just after 7 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a large dormitory. Flinchum said that at least 20 more people were killed at Norris Hall, an academic building. |

Everyone in VA, MD, & DC are freaking out--especially on college campuses.
I work at a crisis counseling line on weekends. I anticipate a large volume increase of calls over the next few weeks.
The death count is up to 33.
God, how awful. Worse than Columbine. |

I went to Virginia Commonwealth University and my brother and sister went to Virginia Tech.
Virginia Tech is in Blacksburg which is a really small town. During the school year, the entire town is just college students.
Very very tragic. Before this incident, the school was VERY safe. It was all college kids and you could walk around in all hours of the night without worrying about anything. |

Some updates from talking to people I know at VT:
there is a confirmed report that it's an asian guy who did the killing.. there are rumors that it's a korean guy. (not my words, the words of my friend at Virginia Tech)
A German professor was shot and killed. I have a friend's brother who jumped out the window and made it but the guy next to him got shot in the leg. |

It wouldn't surprise me if it was Korean who did the shooting. |

I shudder to think what it would be like if Korean students had access to guns. |

So, the dude is a Chinese national who had been in the States for less than a year.
Quote: |
Authorities were investigating whether the gunman who killed 32 people on the Virginia Tech campus in the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history was a Chinese man who arrived in the United States last year on a student visa.
The 24-year-old man arrived in San Francisco on United Airlines on Aug. 7 on a visa issued in Shanghai, the source said. Investigators have not linked him to any terrorist groups, the source said.
Police believe three bomb threats on the campus last week may have been attempts by the man to test the campus security response, the source said.
The exits to the buildings where the shootings occurred were chained by the shooter, the source said. |

A Chinese national who was allowed into the country to study killed 33 Americans. This isn't going to play well in the media. We can expect analysis of Chinese violent pop culture, sexism, violence and the like. |

Not really sure how someone with a student VISA could get their hands on 2 9mm handguns. |
The same way (and perhaps the same house) he could easily get his hands on some blow. |

"A South Korean student was injured in Monday's shooting at Virginia Tech and has been hospitalized, the head of the university's Korean student association said....
The bullet penetrated the arm and scraped the side of the body but did not damage any bones, Lee quoted doctors as saying. Park is expected to be released soon.
There are some 460 students from Korea studying at Virginia Tech undergraduate and graduate schools and an estimated 500 students of Korean descent....
The shooter is said to be a young Asian male, but Lee said chances are low he is a Korean.
'I don't believe any of the Korean students own a gun,' he said."
