For sure I'm going to bring it up next week (exams this week). We're going to talk about the impact on Koreans (considering that the guy had lived in the States since he was 7-8 years old not withstanding), how/if it changes their feelings about studying in the US, what might lead a student to do such a thing, how his family and the victims' families are feeling, gun laws in the State (I won't be defending, just explaining the history) and whatever else comes up.

Of course, these are higher level classes where we've already discussed suicide and the fiasco at the hospital in Puchon...

It is a good handout, but I do wonder whether things like that are designed to benefit the teacher (your own interest in what Koreans think) and not necessarily the students. Maybe it can benefit both, but I personally as a rule try to avoid any materials that I am a little too interested in.

If someone asks me a question about this, of course I shall answer, but I won't bring it up and will choose not to use it as a basis for study.

We haven't discussed it in class yet, but several students have brought it up during break time. (I'm teaching 10 adult students.) We've been working on compare/contrast stuff all week and this afternoon we have a two-hour writing class.

I'm giving the students a selection of three topics to write about. One of them is this topic. I hope all of them choose this topic, because I do want to know what all of them think about it, but I'm not going to insist. I'm not going to limit the topic to compare/contrast, but will mention that as one option in their approach. Another option is to write a letter to one of my friends back home who have e-mailed me asking how the story is being dealt with here. A third option is an editorial. If I think of any more options before class time at 3, I'll include them as well.

(ONE thing I will not do is print out something from 'a right-wing blog'--not my words, like a co-worker did yesterday and take that in to class.)
