I agree that the risk of someone using your passport number for their own purposes is very low, but it's still a risk I'd like to avoid, wherever possible. Maybe different countries have different systems/checks in place, but there have been increasing amounts of passport fraud taking place in NZ, and often the original passport holder has no idea that someone else is using their details. Once you have someone's number I think it can be fairly easy (if you're determined enough and competent with computers) to access all sorts of other information, like insurance, bank account info, etc.

I'm totally in agreement with you on the credit card use/misuse etc.

This has been done by Ryanair in Europe for years, and its definitely no scam. You pay the taxes and nothing more. But its very much a hit and miss thing, and in the end, even free tickets dont end up that much cheaper than the usual low price Air Asia has. So you have to decide what matters the most, price or convenience.
Bet its pretty much sold out now though.....
