I'm all for freedom of speech but how can people like this sleep at night knowing the pain they cause people. |

| Zowie! That is one wacky group of people. I hope they get lots of publicity so they get further marginalized. |

| I don't believe in 100% free speech. If a guy walked up to you and called your mom a prostitute, you have every right to punch him out. If someone publishes an article calling you a pedophile, you can sue them. If some nutjob Christians stake out the funerals of soldiers, Amish people, and VT students, they deserve to be doused in gasoline and forced to run over hot coals. |

It says that he's got Bill O'Reilly (of all people) down as a "fag-enabler". Never would've guessed that... |

OH yeah- that Louis Theroux piece was great. His fake innocence does wonders.
I believe in 100% free speech. People have their right to say whatever they want. Consequences, though, can follow them. They can say your mom's a prostitute, and then they'll learn that that gets them punched in the face.
Those people have their right to free speech. They also know that it can make people hate them. |

| What's even worse than the web site is that these guys actually *believe* what they're saying. As a hardcore, dedicated Christian, I am revolted and sickened by their message of absolute hatred. That's not my God. |

From the Wiki on Fred Waldron Phelps, Sr
"The church at Westboro which he leads has 71 confirmed members, 60 of whom are related to Phelps through blood or marriage or both, although his daughter Shirley says that only 80% are related."
So basically 71 people believe this guy, 53 of which are in-bred? |

| Of course I don't usually support killing people for their beliefs, but it these animals' cases it wouldn't be enough. Still, I suppose anything that humiliates religion is a plus. |

I'm glad other countries disagree.
Free speech is not absolute, even in the US. Look how expensive it is if you say a swear on national TV.
Also, if you're in the US and you go up to someone and say "Wanna buy some naked pictures of your mom?" you could get punched, and deserve it. Not covered by free speech. I think what the Phelpses preach is pretty well on that level. |

Phelps is from Kansas, and I went to a small, private Baptist college in Kansas City, Missouri. We were constantly being harassed by these losers. Luckily, since we were a private school, they couldn't protest on campus, but you'd get the occasional protest out front.
I used to be editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper, and sometimes Westboro would fax us press releases, sometimes referring to me as a f*g-enabler for running various stories about students trying to form a GSA on campus and other things of that sort. Once the fax had a picture of our college president with devil horns, next to clip art of two skeletons dancing, and the press release called him "butt buddies" with the head of our board of trustees. "Butt buddies" is to this day still a favorite phrase among my friends.
But my favorite ridiculous Phelps protest of all time was when our campus Fine Arts program scheduled the Montreal Symphony Orchestra to play for our Kansas City-wide performance program. Westboro decided to protest the concert because they were from Canada, which allows gay marriage. They were all standing around outside the concert hall in downtown Kansas City with signs saying things like "GOD HATES CANADA."
Oh, and pro tip: Don't ever, ever physically assault a Westboro church member. Phelps used to be a lawyer (now dis-barred), and uses the law to his advantage. He has sued many people who have assaulted him, and has apparently made a signficant amount of money that way. |
