and mentally-ill prospective gun owners. Guess that wouldn't fit on the license plates.
http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/04/22/news/virginia.php
"Virginia is the leading state in reporting disqualifications based on mental health criteria for the NICS system, the statement said."
Then again, they don't have much competition:
"Currently, only 22 states submit any mental health records to the federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System, the FBI said in a statement on Thursday."
This is what gets lost in the ban all guns vs. come and take them out of my cold dead hands debate. There are things an overwhelming majority will agree on that we should be able to get done, especially after something like this. Making sure states get mental health records into this system so that people who have been declared "mentally ill and an imminent danger to himself" can't legally buy guns is one of them. |

I saw a similar article and had the same reaction you did. At minimum, states have to cooperate and fully use the mechanisms in place to protect citizens.
It is no infringement on anyone's rights to keep dangerous things out of sick people's hands. We can pass legislation till the cows come home, but if states don't fund the systems, we all end up paying the price in blood. It's shamefully incompetent and irresponsible. |
