Having recently lived in Toronto, and been an every day subway user, the system is very safe, other than at certain stations and on the final two or three trains of the night.
Gopher has every right to bring the stabbing death up. Other things he could have mentioned that the guy was an immigrant, that he was caught because of surveillance cameras, and a number of other things.
The larger issue I see in these recent posts by gopher, and his view that everything is anti-american, is that he is using a tried and true political strategy of diverting attention from a real issue, and an important one, by creating others. Anyone ever see the simpsons episode about proposition 24?
There is a major problem with guns in the US. The foreign policy is a disaster. The social policies domestically have also been less than successful (see no child left behind), and economic policies of massive deficit and debt speak for themselves. The United States is the world's most important country. As it goes, so too is the world likely to go, or at the very least to feel the repurcussions of what the US does. This makes American affairs a major concern for the entire planet, and therefore gives the entire planet not only the right, but the duty to point out problems. That said, a fair number of posts and commentary on this board do border on, or constitute anti-American rhetoric, but honest, factual and legitimate criticisms do not, and there are also a fair amount of those.
Not that anything that's said on this board will influence or impact american government policy, but I would say that by diverting attention, and deflecting criticism from major issues facing the United States, Gopher may actually be doing a disservice to his country, rather than being the patriot I get the sense he considers himself to be.
All that aside, I would love to see more discussion of international issues, and/or issues in other countries, rather than the mundane threads on Bush et al, all the time. |

Women's rights predates the '60's, clueless ones.
As did the civil rights movement.
Neither was the exclusive domain of liberal concern. Indeed, in the early part of the 20th century, 40% of blacks voted Republican.
But I'd concede that progressive ideas were more closely aligned with liberal ideas. However, until the late 1960's, religion was an integral element in the movement. That's a point atheist leftists conveniently overlook. |

Interestingly, Octavius dismisses this entirely because it only deals with one death. I imagine that Canadians only care about victims in the double-digits...hmm.

Octavius is a CanadiaN...not CanadianS. He does not speak for CanadianS, he only speaks for one CanadiaN. (himself).
That concludes our lesson on singular vs plural nouns for today. |

Way too patriotic, defensive, and hypersensitive to legitimate criticism, Conservative.
I just want to talk about Canada and its problems, that is all.
By the way, thanks for the lesson. One can always learn something new. |

You're welcome. However I would posit that using one Canadian as representative of all or even most Canadians' views is a non-starting point.
Your point about Octavius may or may not be valid. But I was simply pointing out the flaw in your analysis where you were extrapolating from one individual's view to extend it to all of his countrymen.
Therefore "legitimate criticism" it was not....
Oh I just got it now..
HA ha ha ha ha! Very funny.

Actually the most common form of murder in Canada is a baseball bat, (or so the stats I read in 2000 said). The bottom line is that Canada has had similar incidents like this as recent as last year. The exception is that Cho killed a lot more people. If you want to get a gun in canada, just go to the same place you buy your dope.
I tend to think left on most issues, but I dissagree with gun control as it currently exists in Canada. But I am also disturbed at how easy it is to carry a gun in the US. I have trouble making up my mind on the issue.
I really don't think it's time for American Bashing here. |

Yeah. The problem with this kind of stuff is everyone inserts their agenda.
Proof Koreans are bad.
Proof the American system is bad.
Proof of the need for gun control.
Proof of the need for guns.
Proof taking prayer out of class was a bad idea.
Proof teaching Evolution is bad.
Proof the VA legislature passing X law is bad because God is angry.
Proof cell phones are causing people to kill.
Proof we need scientology now more than ever. |

The most telling stat is that mass murders really began to spike in the late 1960's about the same time liberals got out of control and God was relegated to the back bench.
But that could be coincidence, right? |
Oh, boy. You sure are opening a can full of worms with that one.
- Things changed when western culture as a whole changed. Drugs, violent TV shows (and later games), loud music, free sex, mass media, the list goes on.
- The presence or absence of God in our daily lives has absolutely nothing to do with this issue. And if it did, it certainly wouldn't help your side of the argument, starting with the Crusades and Inquisition up until modern times. |

Which Constitutional provision or amendment exactly do you refer to here, Adventurer?
In any case, this story treats Canada's pattern of violence in Toronto's subway system and a specific knife-death incident that currently makes Canadian news.
Please note that one woman who works in the subway system is looking for a new job because the violence is so bad there, she no longer feels safe.
Interestingly, Octavius dismisses this entirely because it only deals with one death. I imagine that Canadians only care about victims in the double-digits...hmm.
And as far as Cho's killings go, Adventurer, I am not sure how that has anything to do with automatic weapons, etc. Cho used a Walther and a Glock -- handguns. |
It's all relative. What is an alarming pattern of violence in the Toronto subway system is probably pretty tame in comparison to what goes on in the subways of New York or Washington, DC. |
