Today the same student said he wishes he were Japanese because he loves the cartoons. Until recently virtually no Japanese pop culture was imported into Korea (think there was a trade dispute about games/movies) and now that its pouring in I think that it will help Japanese/Korean relations a lot in the long term.

No trade dispute, Korea just banned Japanese cultural products after WWII. This was to de-Japanonify Korea after 30+ years as a Japanese colony. Although people were still able to get Japanese comics and such in the black market.

Wishes he were Japanese? WOW. That's the opposite of everyone else. Kids as young as grade 2 automatically respond to Japan like bible thumpers and the devil.
