i played the piano from age 6-16, but haven't played for 10 years.
am thinking i should take advantage of the numerous music academies around , plus do something worthwhile with my free time & get back into playing.
i've done abit of research, but haven't bitten the bullet. i'm afraid that i'll have lost my ability after all these years
wondered if anyone has had success with returning to any kind of instrument & if you've any tips. |

I majored in classical guitar, but drifted away from it after graduation. For the next seven years I hardly played at all apart from some occasional noodling. Getting back into serious practice has been difficult, and it's very disheartening knowing I could play much better then than I can now.
I think the most important question you have to ask yourself is - are you returning to it because you feel a kind of intangible, compelling need to do so; or are you returning to it because you really like the idea of being a pianist. If it's the latter, chances are you're not a musician. You'll give it up again sooner or later. The discipline and donkey's work involved simply won't be worth it.
Something that has helped me answer that question is getting up an hour earlier in the morning to practice. I have NEVER been a morning person, but since I moved my practice time to 6 am I actually find myself eager to get out of bed and get to the guitar. As there's very little else in the world that can rouse me at that hour, it says to me that getting back in to serious practice will not be a waste of time. |

One of the reasons I'm happy looking forward to going to Korea is that almost everyone plays the piano. Lot of people have pianos in their homes which will give me access to one. I have a keyboard I've messed with all these years. But I was a lot better in my teenage years, I'm not as good as I was because I packed away my keyboard and would take it out once inawhilie. I never really tried to learn anything back other than sightreading enough to play but forgot what keys determine what key the piece is and everything. |
