There are good and bad verses in the Quran and the Torah. You can actually say that the Quran and the Torah are largely similar in tone in many cases and that Islam is closer to Orthodox Judaism than it is to Christianity and the same, obviously, is true for Judaism. Those who said cherry picking versus are making a point. I could go into where I have problems with Islam, but that is not the argument. Things need to be done in a balanced fashion when dealing with other faiths, races, or people or even when dealing with issues like science versus faith. BJWD you don't seem to look for balance.
Here is an example where the Quran has nice sounding verses:
4:36] "...And do good unto your parents, and near of kin, and unto orphans, and the needy, and the neighbour from among your own people, and the neighbor who is a stranger, and the friend by your side and the wayfarer, and those whom you rightfully possess...."
[This comes from the Old Testament concept of Honour Thy Father and Mother.... The mention of the stranger comes from the Old Teatament and Jewish traditions of "Be kind to the Ger (Stranger) for you were once a stranger in Egypt". I am sure you are familiar with that BJWD, if you've read the TANACH.
Hadith #150. God will not show mercy to him who does not show mercy to others. (Bukhari, Muslim). (Sayings of Muhammad. by Prof. Ghazi Ahmad).
[This from the Hadith strikes me to be similar to John in the New Testament where Jesus says "He who says he loves God but not his brother, do not believe him".
[2.62] Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians [followers of John the Baptist according to Asad, note 49], whoever believes in Allah and the Last day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord, and there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve.
[5.69] Surely those who believe and those who are Jews and the Sabians and the Christians whoever believes in Allah and the last day and does good-- they shall have no fear nor shall they grieve.
[I frankly would not discount the versus BJWD posted, but I would not discounted the ones I just posted as well. That is why I said interpretation is important. Islam didn't come out of thin air. It in a sense is break off from Judaism or was inspired by it. I don't see people like BJWD quoting the Torah to lambast Jews. Why do it to Muslims? The difference is Jews, most Jews, do not follow the dark interpretations of their religion, and percentage wise Jews are far more educated than Muslims. This is what is missing in all this so-called analyses.
I took the above quotes from the following site (work cited):
http://users.frii.com/cnotess/koran1.shtml
For those interested in the similarities between the three faiths the Muslim Quranic Chapter called Al Fatiha sounds very close to the Christian Lord's Prayer. John K. Hitti a a Lebanese professor brought that up in one of his books. It is quite interesting. |

Although I agree with you Adventurer, that it is a question of "interpretation" and not "literalism", I see the differences not as you stated;

but rather more of "power" and access to our media. It is a problem of communication more than those 2 points that you mention (which seemingly valid, are really just gross generalizations and do nothing to illuminate the debate. -- like saying, "you're stupid, I have a Phd, I am right!"

BEHOLD the argumentation abilities of huff!
Eating hamburgers is bad.
Hitting people on the head with a hammer stops them from eating hamburgers.
Thus, hitting people on the head with a hammer is good.
