demi:

Good thread topic but how about a little truth in advertising, like the fact that you're not American, eh?

You should distinguish between Western and Eastern Europeans. Those with raw memories of Soviet rule feel more than a tad bit differently.

And no surprise in the survey results given the jealousy that the EU trade has spurred and the sheer fact that so many are socialists who wouldn't like what America stands for anyway.

ok:

A shocking 37 million Americans live in poverty. That is 12.7 per cent of the population - the highest percentage in the developed world.

You Americans profess how great America is but rarely highlight stats such these, which suggest it's not such a great place to be (in comparison to other developed Nations)

First, STFU. That felt good. Second, The Guardian is a leftist rag which makes no pretense of objectivity (it sacrifices hard news for news analysis on every page) which almost never has anything good to say about America. Figures you would relish this source.

Third, the poverty rate among Americans isn't swept under the carpet. It's also relative: poverty in American rarely equates to what one finds in the developing world, which you'd know if you'd lived there.

Fourth, the poverty rate has been fueled by irresponsible out-of-wedlock parenting, especially among blacks and the rapid increase in illegal immigration. We have a population far more diverse and larger than yours and I wonder how well other smug Western nations would cope with a similar onslaught?

http://www.oxfamgb.org/ukpp/poverty/thefacts.htm

How many people in the UK live in poverty?

Just under 1 in 4 people in the UK or nearly 13 million people live in poverty, according to the latest figures.
This includes nearly 1 in 3 children (almost 4 million).1

Eighteen per cent of children go without two or more items that the majority of the population says are necessities,
such as adequate clothing, toys, or three meals a day.3

One in five non-working families on low or moderate incomes reported being unable to afford some basic food items on most days.

What kinds of poverty are people living in?
One recent survey showed that about 6.5 million adults go without essential clothing, such as a warm waterproof coat, because of lack of money.

Over 10.5 million people live in financial insecurity: they cant afford to save, insure their house contents, or spend even small amounts on themselves. About 9.5 million cant afford adequate housing heated, free from damp.

One reason poverty has increased in Britain since Thatcher is because, unlike most of Western Europe, we decided to follow American style economics. There has since been a widening chasm between rich and poor, and upward mobility out of the working class has become much more difficult.

Translation: "Do not dare suggest that we deviate from the allegation-driven, U.S.-centric discourse."

Interesting chain of events, Big_Bird: Britain invents industrialization and modern capitalism and exports it to America, which experiences "the Market Revolution"; American capitalism eventually outperforms British capitalism; indeed, British capitalism collapses after two world wars shake it to its foundations; Britain and others insist on and follow American leadership following the war, esp. in regulating the international capitalist system; America rebuilds Britian (and the rest of Western Europe after 1945); and now, after America prevailed in the Cold War, Britishers like Big_Bird blame America for capitalism and its dark side.

Ever read E.P. Thompson's Making of the English Working Class, Big_Bird? Classic text on British capitalism -- whose pattern predates the Thatcher govt and the so-called Reagan Revolution.

Do not get me wrong. America is the hegemon and certainly influences events. But how decisive is this influence? Particularly with respect to British capitalism and labor relations?

Yeah, that or the 55% net taxation that keep people from ever getting ahead and make it worthwhile to sit on the dole waiting for the next soccer fight or race riot.

Thatcher broke the Unions. Had she not, the jolly ol'UK would have unemployment as high as France.

Sometimes, you have to look beyond the propaganda bb. The people in the UK are poor because the government keeps them that way. They are built into the system. Not to mention that a one stop ride on the London underground is 8$.

Look to Scotland and Ireland to see the potential paths a state may take.

Says the Fox News hound.

Rolling Eyes

What do you know of America? Nothing. You believe the president trumps the Constitution. You are wrong.

You believe war trumps freedom and patriotism. You are wrong.

You believe the law applies to those only with no power. You are wrong.

By virtually any measure, the non-Americans here posting for freedom and the rule of law are more American than you are.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=America-hater

America-hater Idea

An American citizen, invariably by birth, who feels guilty about living in a country so wealthy and full of opportunity that they turn their resentment outward. They are usually spotted by snide or disparaging remarks about capitalism, wealth, the private sector, Republicans, the military, and the Founding Fathers; during wartime, they express sympathy for the enemy.

I knew she was an America-hater when she started dissing Ann Coulter and praising Cindy Sheehan.
