RACETRAITOR is right. Go with the USO, unless you are a Korean citizen. There are a few nationalities the USO won't take, and if you are a Korean citizen, you can't go with them (unless you hold a U.S. greencard). The USO takes you places other tours don't/can't go.
There are other tour companies that go, too, but the USO is the best. Register ASAP as spots fill up quick.
One more note: You will have to pay in US dollars (or use a credit card, but it is still USD). |
They may have changed that policy; I paid in Won when I went in September. |
I paid in won in August this year.

It says on the site that you can pay either won or dollars. |

Our very nationalist tour guide told us about 8 times how much healthier all Korean food is than all American food and promptly brought us to a lunch of bibimbap (you might be thinking 'how can they mess up bibimbab' but they did) with sides of fried mandu and that weird Korean mayonnaise salad that was somehow purple. |
Sounds like we had a different guide. Ours was one of the most pro-American Koreans I've encountered, repeatedly thanking the US and other countries for helping Korea. But the food was still terrible. The fried mandu looked like it might be OK, but it was also cold and gross. That was the worst bibimbap I've ever had. And it was 5,000 Won, I think. |
I tried the 'American' buffet. It didn't take me long to understand why all the soldiers were buying slices of pizza. |

It is not true that only USO tours Camp Bonifas. Here is another excellent tour company: http://www.panmunjomtour.com/english/jsa/jsa_19.htm
They have tours every day and you are accompanied by someone who has escaped North Korea, which makes for a really interesting tour. |

I've only went on one tour which was booked through the ticket and tours office on a military base. So if you have friends in the military hit them up to go with you. All bases will have a tickets and tours office.
If you can go on one of those tours the guides are American Soldiers and can give you a great tour. However if you go on one of these tours you cannot wear shorts, t-shirts etc.

I was booking a trip for my mother andfoolishly didn't check eslcafe for a recommendation. So here is my advice:
Don't book with mclubtrvel.com! We booked that company for one person only to have them call the day before and say they couldn't take my mother.
"Why?" my mother asked.
"Oh, we don't go to Panmunjeom" they said.
Being a teacher here i decided to call back.
"What nationality are you?" they asked.
"Australian, why does that matter?" I queried.
"Oh, only American and Japanese can go to Panmunjeom."
...
So I cut to it. "Are you refusing to take my mother because she is the only one booked for the tour?"
A pause, then a hesitation, then a quiet: "Yes".
Then I tore in. Let me say that I understand that businesses need unpopular policies to ensure the sustainability of their enterprise. If they had offered to pay for my mother to book another tour then I would have been placated. Instead their solution was to go to the sofitel hotel and book there. I recall using the following words in the ensuing dressing down: unacceptable, unethical, shame, unfair, disappointing. She said she was sorry and I could tell she was but they streamline in so that accountability is divoced from feedback in business.
After hanging up I called cosmojin travel and the contrast couldn't have been greater. Great phone manner anyway, they seemed to have their act together.
Morals of the story,
1. Don't go with mclubtravel when you can go with other great companies.
2. Mess with my mum and ou mess with me. |
