I feel sorow but more I feel anger. This is a new subway system - only finished around the end of 95 or 96. Yet today I read about the lack of a sprinkler system on the station; the use of fabrics that were highly flammable and gave off a highly toxic gas when on fire; the lack of a security system on the train and station to cover this kind of accident; the lack of manual over-ride systems to allow the doors to be opened when the electrical systems failed.

All these items could have been and should have been addressed since they are not new ideas and have been around in public areas for many, many years in other countries. If this is the system in their newest full subway system then what is the older subway system in Seoul like. I do not use the subway here because of the stairs and the lack of fresh air circulation but I now have another reason for staying out of the subway.

Let's hope that like other countries Korea will use this tragedy to improve the systems country wide. I read about the money to be spent renewing the stream that was buried many years ago under roadways - surely this money would be better spent on the public transport system.

Awful business.
What sickened me was the deeply offensive comments posted here by teachers. Even if you are deeply unhappy in your job, that is no reason to gloat over the deaths of the innocent, simply becasue you heard insensitive comments after the NYC attacks on Sep 11 2001.

To me a reminder that there are people teaching here who should NEVER have left home.

You are right. It was multiple postings by one teacher.

It highlighted a defect of the new forum. Entries appear instantly before they are moderated. Only after dave was notified were these remarks edited out. In thenold style, moderators saw them then edited them then posted them.

Maybe Dave will have a re-think.

Been Here Years: Amen to that. I also saw that they busted a gas line and blew up the whole street when they were building it. Those Daegu people are cursed.
It's really terrible that most of the people were trapped because of the system. And I heard the driver of the other train didn't bother to open the door so the people burned inside. Can you believe there are 300 missing?
I would also like to point out how many people are so eager to point out the flaws of Korea. This subway is obvious, but complaining about the coverage? They got news on almost every hour not to mention YTN. You also have the various news pages on the internet. Just don't count on much on a Sunday's newspaper.

That's the one that really gets me. You should always have a manual override in case the electrical system fails. Who designed these subway cars? Star Trek engineers?

What?

Older trains have the manual release in a compartment at the top right of the door behind a panel you flip up. Newer trains have the manual release under the seat beside the door accessed by a flip up cover.

Some of the materials used in the seats, floors, and walls of the Daegu subway trains are banned from use in the United States and Europe. Korean train-makers use nonflammable substances for trains exported to developed countries, but use low quality, flammable substances when delivering trains to local governments.

Stations ability to detect an accident immediately is also unsatisfactory, with the number of security cameras and guards being insufficient and poorly placed. In Seoul subway stations, the seven to eight security cameras are mostly crowded around escalators and elevators.

yeah substand construction...

Then tragically people didn't know how to use the manual release. Reminds me of when people tune out while the flight attendant goes through the safety drill.

I thought that the manual override system for the doors was a no brainer, but these people were in total pitch blackness with smoke and confusion. I think we need to move away from questioning the people in the cars to questions the engineers and management personal who approved the systems the Deagu underground uses, and more importantly we need to question the operators of the underground who went ahead with actions that we not safety first responses.

I agree weatherman and I'm not blaming the people on the cars for what happened. Please don't misunderstand that, although there is something to be said to know where things are for your own survival's sake.

don't forget panic. Even if you don't panic others will and probably will obstruct your path to the device. I was on the subway this morning and I looked for it. its a really tiny panel under the seat near the door. exactly where it would be impossible to access in a panic situation.

And it seems the fire spread faster than... something that spreads really fast... Not a lot of time to scramble on the floor for a switch

What?

Did you not see the front page of the paper or watch the news for last couple days where they show the picture taken from inside the subway car during the fire? The one with the lights on...

The picture shows people sitting, talking, covering their mouths, looking around... OH, AND A CAR FLOODED WITH SMOKE... WHat do you not see? NOT A SINGLE PERSON TRYING TO OPEN THE DOOR. That, and we can conclude one guy thought "hey, I'll take a picture while the subway I'm in is on fire." Rolling Eyes

I'm sorry, that's evolution in action. Too stupid to live.
