Just a few minutes ago sports day was concluded at my little country elementary school (70 students for grades 1-6). I was surprised to see at least one parent and probably at least one grandparent for each student. I guess if you're a farmer it's easier to get away...then I discovered what I believe to be the reason for the fantastic turnout. The raffle!!!
In between exercises, sporting events, and dances, names were drawn out of a box. The winners received a variety of items including soju, beer, and packs of cigarettes. I was told everyone wanted the cigs because they were the most expensive item. Only in Korea... |

At our elememtary, many kids got fabulous looking gift-wrapped boxes in the raffle.
As I handed out a one such heavy box, I asked what the contents were.
(I imagined the prizes to be a game for the kids).
I was told that the heavy boxes were crockery!
I never imagined that any of them would have contained ciggies and booze, . Many were heavy and some were carton sized. LOL |
