|
|
Hi all;
I have a question in regards to the flight home promised by most ESL employers in Korea. In my contract, it states that the school will provide a flight back to my point of hire at the end of my contract. The contract also states that the air ticket provided cannot be exchanged for a cash equivalent, that the ticket can not be transferred to another person, and that the school is not reponsible for air tickets which are not used by the teacher. I'm hoping to travel elsewhere at the end of my contract for an extended amount of time before returning home and was hoping to be able to use the air ticket from Korea to another desitnation, which would undoubtedly be cheaper for the school than flying me home to North America. I would think paying for a flight from Korea to say, Thailand or Australia would be in the school's best interest. By the sounds of it, my school isn't terribly fleixble in regards to the flight home. Has anyone encountered this sort of situation in the past? If so, how did it pan out? |

Tell them that because you love the school so much you want to save them money. |

You can try what VI said or, if you are to buy the ticket and they reimburse you, get a refundable one. Then return it and go where you want, that is what I am doing. |

It's not surprising that the school is inflexible. This is because they either want to abide strictly by the contract or want to save as much money as possible. If the latter is the case, then they should be willing to pay for the ticket that is less expensive instead of the flight to North America. |

Just book a flight home that is refundable, have your school give you the money, then change the flight if you want. Your name is on the ticket, they don't even have to know that you changed it.

My hagwon was really cool about the airfare back home.
Instead of negotiating for the equivalent of the cost of a ticket to Nashville, USA, I told them that I would be satisfied if they would just pay for the multi-stop ticket to Singapore and Vietnam.
They told me they would rather pay the equivalent of the ticket to the USA, so they deposited 870,000 won into my bank account last Monday, which was 43 days before the end of my contract.
The multi-stop ticket to Singapore and onward to Vietnam with Singapore Air was 490,000 won, so I'm happy with how things worked out. |

My contract has the option of either the plane ticket or an equivalent amount in cash. It could be worth asking ... |
