Does anyone have any experience with a Canadian based recruiter that they had a good experience with. Also, is it safer to go with recruiters from your home country as opposed to those in Korea, or are all recruiters the same??

( 1 ) All recruiters are not the same. There are some good recruiters out there and there are bad recruiters out there. It's a 50/50 crapshoot whenever you use a recruiter and that's the best unbiased opinion I can give you. I think a recruiter in Korea has more influence on employers than recruiters do outside of Korea. There have been several recruiters who have helped teachers during a dispute with their employer. They can be helpful in that aspect.

( 2 ) If your really concerned about who your recruiter is, then consider using Michael Duffy as a recruiter. ( www.duffrecruiting.com ). Rowan Hall as well ( www.esl-planet.com ) Duffy is a moderator at www.efl-law.com who has alot of knowledge about taxes, pension, and medical insurance. That certainly works out in your favor if you have questions about taxes, pension, and medical insurance in your labor contract.

I would beg to differ with my fellow expat on this one.

Some may be better than others BUT there is no good/bad.

Recruiters are not working for you (they work for the school who is paying them). They are not your friend. They are NOT your babysitter. They will NOT take care of you when things go sour with your employer. They cannot act on your behalf if you have problems.

A good analogy would be a used car salesman. They show you the car (introduce you to it). You don't trust anything they tell you.

YOU check the car out and decide if you want to buy it. You buy and they get paid.

A recruiting agency is pretty much the same - an introduction to an employer and nothing more. They get paid by the school / hakwon to find a warm body who will meet the requirements demanded by immigration for a work visa.

Send your information to every recruiter you can find along with your job preferences.

Scan the replies. Choose the ones that appeal to you and ignore the rest.

Now get a copy of their contract. If it is acceptable to you, get the names of reference foreign teachers. Do your own due dilligence and you will be fine.

Trust any recruiter and you will, 100% assured, at some point, get burned.

Right. I've had recruiters tell me outright lies and do anything they can to get me to sign a contract. Also, don't count on any aftercare. Once you sign and get to the school chances are you won't hear from your recruiter again.

I've even gone back to the same recruiter who had previously found me a job (I completed the contract). They had no idea who I was.

There are 3 basic theories when using recruiters:

1. Get as many as you can working for you and take the first offer you like from whoever brings it to you

2. Stick with 2-3 as some recruiters won't work with you once word gets around that you've hired a couple dozen recruiting agencies. This is due to conflicts when contacting schools, etc...you may be viewed as 'difficult to work with' or appear desperate.

3. They suck; don't use them.

3 has become less popular over the last few years since recruiters seem to a necessary part of job searches now.

OP, be very careful when posters provide exact addresses for recruiters. They could be recruiters themselves. I have a strong suspicion that duffrecruiting and esl-planet are linked.

I have personal experience with one of these two gentleman, and, not to slander, in the end I chose not to proceed. I, too, followed Alabamaman's advice.

My advice is to drop any recruiter once a "red flag" appears.

Please don't enter any agreement lightly.

I can assure you that they are 2 different people...

I know Micheal Duffy very very well. I have known him personally for over 5 years. We have been overseas together and travleed to places to Korea many times and have a couple of beers together a couple of times a week. He is not related in any way, shape or form to esl-planet.

While I generally do not disagree Mr. Duffy does do a lot to help out his recruits.

He makes he sure he advises them on all their options if things do go wrong and has helped a couple of people through the legal system and taken them to the labor board to get what is owed to them. He provides a lot of support after recruitment.

While he can't do everything and there are a couple of nutballs he has had to deal with who were asking for the moon and stars when they deserved a good kick in the ass he generally will try to help in any way shape or form....

Yea, don't trust recruiters. They lie and try to cheat you; if they don't get their way they cry like babies.

I had one recruiter (Hihao) threaten to never work with me again if i didn't take a job. Even though i was very close to signing, i decided i would not deal with people who behave so rudely. The recruiter then emailed me and told me i was known by others and nobody wanted to deal with me.. blah blah...

Now i've found a much better job. Just remember, they need you more than you need them.
