I was wondering how often people who frequent this board read. My reading habbit cost me about 100,000 a month. I buy about 4 books a month from Whatthebook. Am I a nerd or what? How often does everyone else in Korea read?

At least you have a bookstore to buy from.
I have to buy from Amazon.
I'm way behind on reading the books which I've already ordered,
but I can't stop ordering.
I am truly a 책벌레.

You can buy from Whatthebook too. I don't live in Seoul but I buy from Whatthebook since I cannot use my Korean bank card to buy from Amazon.

I like to read very much and have used both Whatthebook ... and Amazon since I have been here .... and bookstores which are not on the Internet. Whatthe book is both a physical bookstore (not where I live) and on the Internet.... I have been happy with both ... I know it is relatively expensive but to me ... books are my essential "luxury" item and not optional extras ....

The book that I am currently reading is going slow. I am reading "The Occupation of Iraq".

I cannot wait to get my next Upton Sinclair book. I just read "Moneychangers". I read it in just three nights. I drink on the weekends and read Sunday through Thursday night. I read The Jungle in high school but had not read another Sinclair book until recently.

I read a lot. I miss libraries. I miss my bookstore at home.

If anyone is interested- you should try http://www.powells.com it's a huge legendary bookstore that sells used and new in my hometown. They shipped some stuff to me. While the shipping can be expensive (because it's overseas), you can buy some really cheap used stuff and their selection is amazing.

Four books is a slow month for me.

I have seven books on the go now, will finish all but one this month I suspect, and by then be into a few more. I have mornings free and spend an hour or two then, plus take a book with me on the weekends.

When buying them, I tend to load up a backpack full, hitting the bookstores of Seoul and Busan when weekend trips take me thereabouts. I know others who order them online but I'ven't really gotten into that yet, afraid I'd have to buy yet another bookcase to hold them all. I have 30-40 yet to read on my shelf, half of which are on my beach book list (certain books lend themselves to lounging under a tree) set until September except for a few must-reads I'll pick up along the way.

So do I. So much.... JZer... If you miss libraries, you're a "book nerd" too, though the only ones who ever say that are those who since university have read one book a year, and that year was a while ago. Wink

Sorry, I have only been out of university for 18 months after spend 7 years there. I have read about 26 books since coming to Korea. I doubt I could ever read seven books a month. I usually spend an hour or two a day studying Korean. Not to mention that I am starting to learn Khmer as well.

Just The Jungle in university for its historical significance and Dragon's Teeth for its Pulitzer Prize a few years after. Very descriptive and vivid if a bit melodramatic. I remember he sets up scenes very well but was lacking in character development.

He's written tons. Can you recommend one of them? I can't recommend either one I read unless one is into history. They're a bit dated. Not classics of literature like Zola.

I'm th same. I used to buy mine from eBay, then Whatthebook went online and screwed me (and my wallet).

I think, in Korea, I must have near 700-800 books. About triple that back home. I've got about 25 on my shelf now, and I'm hoping to have them finished by the end of my contract in August.

Well, I am into history so I am interested in the historical perspectives. I think that the characters in Moneychangers are interesting. There is Allan Montague that tries to help his widowed friend Lucy. I just ordered Manassas: A Novel of the Civil War.
