I would copy and paste this guy's articles here but you can't do that on a phpbb board so I'll just post the link here along with images from two of the articles (I've pasted ten of my favourites on the other link):

This professor appears in the Joongang Ilbo every few days and I agree with pretty much everything he writes. It's nice to see somebody that can take a critical look at design here. Here's one image from the first article I saw him write where he compares building advertising in Korea and Japan:
Left - noisy, large, confusing. Right - clear, effective, well unified.
Here's another one where he shows how lines work in England to show the car ahead of time when the pedestrian crossing is about to show up:
(top is Korea, bottom is England)
It's all in Korean but I'll translate this one part:
도로는 사람과 차가 공존하는 공간입니다. 차도와 보도를 구분하고 횡단보도를 설치한 것은 보행자와 운전자 모두를 보호하기 위한 것입니다.
The road is an area shared by both cars and people. Pedestrian crossings are set up to differentiate between the (car) road and the (pedestrian) path, in order to protect both the pedestrian and the driver.
하지만 대부분의 운전자는 횡단보도 앞에서 보행신호가 끝나기를 기다리는 것을 짜증스러워합니다. 마치 보행자들이 자신의 차도를 잠시 빌려 지나가는 것처럼 말입니다.
However, most drivers wait with irritation in front of the pedestrian light for it to change, as if the pedestrian is the one to have the gall to borrow the driver's road for a short period of time.
(not a direct translation I know, but that's how I like to phrase it)
Conclusion: since I've seen a lot of his points made here on the board time after time, if you want to get your point across to a Korean friend on this subject, just find one of his articles and give it to them. 권영걸, that's his name. |

Yeah, he makes lots of sense. Hopefully when I come back to Korea, I will find some of his suggestions on the streets. |

I prefer the Korean one in this case. To my eyes the Japanese one looks boring and bland in comparison. |

All senses get a workout in Korea, that's for sure. |

I understand what you are saying Mith but I think the japanese picture is a bit misleading.....
It is obvious to me from living in japan that it is just one big electronic department store and those are the products/brands that they sell.
If you look on any department store in korea there will be very little signage as well.......
japan has some very ugly buildings as well........ |

Just thought I would add that in Sanbon all building are being cleaned up and changed towards the style of the Japanese example. I believe all buildings are required to have changed by the end of 2007. |
