i'm thinking of leaving my school in a hurry (breaking contract), don't ask me why, i have my reasons. so i'm wondering, how will this affect being in Korea in the future? even if i'm done with the school i don't want to be done with the country. what is the school's procedure, do they contact the immigration department and cancel the visa? if i came back again would i be flagged for this? what about for finding jobs here in the future?

You would most likely not be able to work in Korea again until your current contract expires. That way, if you love Korea but hate your boss, the sytem makes sure you end up hating Korea, too. What a brilliant way for a country to gain the international approval it so desperately craves, eh?

Why don't you just claim a family emergency and ask for a LoR?

My aunt Helen died I have to go home, I am very sorry, I am an emotional wreck we were so close, she married my ex-husband and this is just crushing me, sob, sob, wahhh, wahh, sniffle, sniffle. My Uncle Ben has cancer I don't think he'll last much longer we were very close and he's the father of my youngest son.

Give that a shot.

Don't use the "my grandma died" thing. It takes away credibilty from people who actually do need to go home for a family emergency.

Ask for a LoR and give notice like a professional.

If they are so shady that you think they won't pay you then your only option is to run and teach in Taiwan or something for a few months unti your current visa expires.

Almost right, but not exactly. It's not your contract that has to expire, but rather the visa you are working under at this time. If it's been six month since your E-2 was granted, you will have to wait another 6 six months before they will give you another one ... pretty sure this is right, and it amounts to just about the same as what ybs said above, anyway.

somantics. The contract ends when the visa ends. All Yu bum suk was saying is she'd be gone for the rest of her intended year.

As stated:

1- You would be unable to work in Korea until your current E-2 expires.

That is the most likely scenario.

However, depending on your employer you could also be flagged with immigration (passport number) if for example you ran and owed money to your employer due to contractual clauses (airfare for example). Then when you re-enter they could nab you.

This does not happen often but if your boss is so minded he or she can definitively make it hard for you to comeback in.

Finally, this may or may not register with you but by running you are shafting your students and your co-workers. There are ways to terminate employment like a mature adult here. Give your notice and quit.

Also by running you help no one. If you boss is a bad one, take him to the labor board like others do and make sure he gets nabbed for cheating you. Otherwise all you are doing is looking out for number one only...under such circumstances why should anyone here help you out?

It is not where you work that makes you professional (or a tool), but HOW you work.

My visa expired 3 months after my contract ended and I stayed in Korea the whole time, so not necessarily true.

I always advise against running, for most of the same reasons you do. Death in the family, severely ill loved one, no problem, I'm out of here, no job or consideration for coworkers would stand in the way. If your boss can't handle that, he or she is as big an ass as skconqueror, and truth is, I've only met a couple of Korean employers who were that big of a jerk.

(Actually happened once. The wongjangnim knew and could see how much I was bothered by being an ocean away at such a time. Insisted I get on a plane, and then she taught my classes for me for almost three weeks. Maybe she thought I'd probably do the same for her if it were turned around ... never even docked my pay for the time missed. Instead, gave me 300,000 to buy presents from America for the kids at the school. I guess she knew I'd be back.)

If all it is that you don't like where you are, though, do the right thing. Give notice. You are not the only person in the world.

Are you in physical danger? Is someone you love sick or dying? Do the right thing.
