I'm thinking about buying a unit for my office (which only has a fan) but I don't know much about A/C units. Don't they have to have somewhere to vent warm air in order to be effective? How can the portable stand-alones work, then?

They do need to vent somewhere- the stand alones have a tube (like the kind that a dryer has) that you'd put into a window to get rid of the moisture and hot air... the advantage is you don't need to take up the entire window with it just a small amount and can keep the window screen in- but it definitely needs a place to vent...

APC, the company that makes backup power supplies, used to sell one to use in server rooms. We had one at a place I worked in the US.

Where do you get them in Korea?

My window is about six inches from the building next door. I couldn't use a window unit even if I found one.

I guess I can cut a small hole in the screen. I was going to look for one at Costco. Can anyone recommend prices and brands? I need to cool an 8 pyong office.

For an 8 pyeong office, a portable will be fine. Look for one that has an internal water collection system or, if you can't cut a hole in the screen, run the drip hose into a big bucket. Just don't forget to empty it!

Prices range from 330,000 won to over 4 million won (for portable???).

Just don't be surprised if someone biatches that your little 8-pyonger portable A/C is "doubling" the school's power bill.

I think it's time for the annual "Dave's Air-conditioner Hold-out Contest" -- May is months too soon to fire up the A/C.

I'm really jealous of people like you. I never stopped using my a/c in Korea. During winter, even though it's cold outside my apartment would always be really hot (like 20ish degrees--muggy).

My wife is a bit wiser than me, so ours will be on as a last resort.

I just stick the fan (we got last week) on for 10 mins to cool me down.
I thought that because our electricity bill was so small each month, that having A/C on wouldn't be too expensive, but.........

My wife explained that the electricity tariff increases hugely, when consumption goes over a certain level each month.
So it pays to use A/C liberally, using ventilation and fans etc..

The bonus is that it could also be better for the planet?

I'm fortunate. I'm in a mountain valley with the sun blocked by mountains.
I just let the apartment get really cold at night. Sometimes open the
window if I have to. If I close everything and keep the bathroom door
closed (bathroom window open to let out the moisture) then it keeps the
afternoon heat out.

We'll see how long I can keep doing that.
