Buy some Levis here for 150,000 won? Buy em in the US for 35$. |
Absolutely. We all know that basic 501's go for about $35 in N. America. Try hard enough you might be able to cop them for $30. How much do basic (no premium/no special fading/no redline) 501's go for in Korea? Last time I checked it was 113,000 won.
Nowadays, 99.9% of Levi's aren't even made in America, the exception being its vintage line, accounting for a tiny percentage of its sales. As for the Levis in Korea, they are MADE IN KOREA. So, why are they so expensive? Can't be the labor costs and the materials are no different.
I told this to a Korean co-worker one time. She said something that was so predictable that I was jackass for even asking. She said that Korean levis are more expensive because the quality is better than anywhere else in the world. |
Ha! Seeing as the inseams on the Levi's here are the worst I've ever seen...
Anyway, my take on Korean fashion is: They don't set trends. Koreans are under the assumption that they are a leading fashion producer because:
A: They are *on par* with everyone else
and
B: The Japanese do indeed come here to shop
So, let's explore those two items.
For the first statement, I will say that Korea, in it's own gimpy, cheesy, just-slightly-not-on-the-mark kind of way, is pretty much on par with the rest of the world goes as far as the *look*. What they are completely lacking is SOUL. For instance they have the vintage look down, but the Konglish just ruins everything. The whole point of vintage was that it was not only a cool design but also potentially funny. Without the humor of vintage, it's kind of boring.
Next, no, it's not a myth that the Japanese come here to shop. However, Koreans are fooling themselves as to why: because the stuff here is CHEAP. Not because it's bursting with avant-garde creativity, but because it's the same stuff they're wearing in japan at a fraction of the price.
This topic is interesting to me because, despite not being too much of a bold dresser, I do pay attention to fashion wherever I go. It just tells you a lot about a place. I was recently on a date with two girls working in fashion here, and, god, it sounded like pretty much everything I was thinking--very assembly line-ish. Don't tell your higher ups if you see an english mistake because it might embarrass them. Don't break the mold.
ALL THAT BEING SAID.
I have to admit that, when I first got here, I really did want one of those loud assed men's suits. |

Here's more proof that Japan is better than Korea when it comes to fashion. In December I bought a $450 designer bag in Osaka. It was made by Nicky Hilton for Samantha Thavasa. It is a beautiful, light pink bag with lots of hardware on it, pretty charms and a heart shaped mirror that dangles on the side opposite the charms. It is also leather. Very nice. Tonight I went to Lotte department store to look for a new black bag. I went to the Coach store, and they have a bag there going for 485,000 won and it is mostly made of canvas. That's 35,000 won more than what I paid for my gorgeous bag in Japan. Also, hahaha...Korea doesn't even have Samantha Thavasa bags by Nicky Hilton yet. First, Japan. I heard next they will be sold in NYC. Not Korea. But I did buy a nice charm necklace at Tifffany's today. hehehe^^ |

Yeah, but it's a gorgeous bag though. Much more beautiful than those plain Gucci and Prada, Coach things. I saw so many shiny, black patent leather bags at Lotte today. They may be expensive, but boy do they look cheap!!! Nicky sure knows how to design bags. I could care less what else she does. |

Oh, and one more thing I saw at Lotte today. I like the brand called Egoist, but man they really screwed up this time. Clothes for ladies with the Playboy bunny on them. What self respecting lady would wear anything with the Playboy bunny on it? Yuck! Korean girls want to wear this trash?????????? Surprising! |

The FUBU thing does trip me out. I never saw anyone but blacks and a few wannabe blacks (I'll refrain from the "w" word) wear FUBU. Do Koreans know that it means "For Us By Us", as in for black people, by black people? |

The Japanese wear clothes/accessories with the Playboy Bunny all the time. Go there and chances are you will see several old men wearing Playboy knee socks, high school students wearing Playboy cardigans over their uniforms, etc.
And I'm pretty sure that Egoist is a Japanese brand.

HOT TIP! Go to the black markets in Songtan, and you can pick up Levis next to the Pringles and Captain Oatmeal, for like 40 bucks. Not bad, real deal, and you may even get a rub and tuck if you have the skilzzz like me. |
