You have $100. You must buy exactly 100 chickens, at least one of each kind, spending exactly $100.

How many of each do you buy?

Chick is not an abreviation for chicken. You are wrong.

If chick is not an abbreviation for chicken, then the problem is impossible as it states you MUST buy exactly 100 chickens. Either way, there is still no difficulty in this. Qinella, please explain why this should be so hard.

This doesn't seem very hard, unless it is a trick question which i didn't pick up on.

You know you have to buy chicks in intervals of 20, since you need whole dollar amounts. It must be between 20- 80 chicks.
At most it will take you 4 tries.
I started with buying 20 chicks saw that it was way off so I tried 80 chicks.
80 X .05 = 4
1 X 1 =1
19 X 5 =95

I think?

Yes, we can also add a bit more information: (x,y,z) are Elements of the set of natural numbers.

However there are three unknowns and only two equations, so to find the answer to the problem you have to bruteforce it by guessing every possible combination. To reach a perfect solution without guesswork, we would need three equations.

Don't the two equations simplify to:

x+y+z=5x+y+z/20

I'm not sure?

I knew I shouldn't have sold my math book.

Maybe that's why you need the third equation?

I didn't say it was hard. For me it took about 4 minutes in my head. However, my dad, who told me the problem, said he couldn't solve it after two weeks of trying.

You seem to be confused about the language. Hens are female chickens, roosters are male chickens, chicks are baby chickens. So you need 100 total chickens, some of each kind. Where you are from, do you use different labels for chickens?
