|
|
During the summer, while living in Ganwon-do, I enjoyed travelling to Sokcho on my days off quite a bit. The fresh sea breeze and decent beaches were a nice break from the dead air of Wonju.
Now I live in Gunpo, and have a couple of days off next week. Sokcho's too far away, so where can I go on the west coast that would be like Sokcho, relaxing and without crowds? |

Daechon, but don't go during the Mud Festival. |

I just went to Mallipo yesterday and think it's better than Daechon. In fact, the whole of Annmyeondo island is beautiful, so I've heard. |

I second that. Nice sunsets. Lots of good places in Anmyeondo. Now's the perfect time, not too crowded, yet. |

How does one get to Mallipo? Is it easy enough to find cheapish accommodation there? I'm looking to go somewhere next weekend so would be interested in finding out more about this place. Do the restaurants in the area only serve seafood or other stuff aswell? |

Mallipo is probably the closest to the general feel of a Sokcho on the West Coast.. but Sokcho is so much better - anywhere on the East Coast blows away the West Coast. |

Look in the Lonely Planet. It's where I found out the info. Lots of minbak and some bibimbap/samgupsal restaurants. |

The south coast is way underrated. |

Even more important.. which is the best beach on the East Coast?
I've been impressed with both Gangneung and Sokcho.
Where else is recommended.. and favorite beaches? |

thanks for the advice. went to Mallipo over the holiday, had a really nice time. getting there was difficult, from ansan to seosan to taean to mallipo, but after finally arriving, there were good, cheap accomodations and restaurants. it wasn't crowded either. the surrounding countryside was beautiful too. i had forgotten how rural Korea can still be. |

I'm partial to Hwajinpo Beach near Gangseong. Travelling there's a little difficult without your own transportation though. But even in mid July, you can have the beach to yourself. |
Good call. Actually its easy to reach -- a city bus from Sokcho (#1) drops you right at the entrance. From mid-july to mid-august it gets pretty crowded but other people on the beach are a good part of the fun.
Good news for those who like a beach all to themselves. Word has it all the barbed wire up on this coast is coming down before prime summer season. A lot of pristine sand will be opening up. |
