|
|
Does anyone know where I can find a good, cheap acoustic? I hear there are some good music shops in Songtan (where I live) but thought maybe Seoul has good ones as well.
I left my D-28 back home and am looking for an Epiphone E-J 45 or something similar. I'm not yet familiar with the area, so any directions would be most appreciated! |

Did you try Mr. Potato in Songtan? There is also that music shop in the Shinjang mall. |

I had the same question six months ago. I searched and searched and when I finally found THE answer...this is what I posted:
I started this thread when I was back in the states. I didn't want to bring my 1946 Martin 00-18 and I figured I'd buy a cheap guitar here. While I appreciate every suggestion offered here, now that I am in Seoul, I have found the definitive answer on where to buy guitars and musical equipment and would like to share that with you.
When you get here, you'll have to learn how to use the subway system. Once you feel up to it, take Line 3 (the orange line) to Jongno 3(sam)-ga. If you get a subway map you cannot miss it. Once off the metro, you will find yourself in a district that abounds in musical instruments. Don't be tempted to stop at the first shop you see selling guitars. Go to "Nak Won Sang Gia", a huge building/warehouse. Here you will find everything you need and more. |

Mr Potato rocks. Just don't take lessons from him...he teaches like 3 people at a time while selling guitars in the middle of the shop. But his guitars are pretty decent and cheap. |

Where exactly is it located? Near the base? |

Pretty close to the base, just one or two blocks away. It's close to Pizza Club, if you know where that is. |

Mr. Potato really exists? Damn, I've tried emailing him several times and gotten nothing back. His website doesn't work properly... I've been starting to think he's just a myth!
WHERE is his his shop? HOW do I get there (from Seoul)? WHY do all his guitars (on the pics that do seem to work) have that Gawdawful ugly headstock on them? |

When you come out the main gate to Osan AB make a right.
Go straight about 100 meters and you will see the road veer off to the Left.
Make a left and about 50 meters on the right is Mr. Potato.
Or if you take the bus the bus station is on a corner. Depending on which exit you use from the station make a right ( towards the bridge)
Go over the bridge and about 50 meters further on the right will be Mr. Potato.
My feeble attempt of a map.

You want to take Line 1 south to Songtan Station (it's about 6 or 7 stops south of Suwon). The base/Mr. Potato is about a 10 or 15 minute walk from the station, and although I've made that walk many times I can't begin to give you directions. Sorry. Just hop in a taxi and say "Osan Air Force Base." They'll know what's up.
Mr. Potato's English is pretty impressive. |

I talked to Mr. Potato today! He's leaving for America the 21st of June and he doesn't know if anyone is going to take over his store or not. He said he got his green card, and since he's getting ready to take off, he's no longer accepting credit cards.
I bought a GREAT sounding guitar for 200k--the playability and sound are actually on par with my Martin back home!
Here's a pic of his shop, located near CitiBank:
