A Korean friend of mine was talking about the latest phone scam. Here's how it goes...

Someone prank calls your child's phone, and their voice is recorded. The prank calls continue numerous times, until the child turns off their phone.

They then call you (the parent) and say that they are the mafia, and have kidnapped your child. If you do not pay a ransom by transfer immediately, your child will be killed or injured. You can try to call, but the phone has been turned off. If you don't believe them... here is your child now (the voice of someone mimicking the child's voice is screaming/begging in the background). Calls to the child's phone go unanswered, because the phone has been turned off due to the prank calls. The child is actually OK.

This phone scam has cost some important people millions of won, including a Korean supreme court judge, who wired 50,000,000 won away.

Sounds nutty, doesn't it?

Has happened to my girlfriends mom. They said we have your son!!! She said no you don't, he's sitting right beside me!!! I thought that was pretty funny!! Happened to my co-teachers mother too. She couldnt get ahold of her son for a few hours and was apparently freaking out. He showed up at home a few hours later after the original call and said he had turned it off cuz people wouldn't stop calling him.

So, i know it does happen. You'd think it would have been on the news by now, or the newspaper....Maybe it has, i dunno. My girlfriends parents called the police and apparently they have received alot of calls about it.
