Minimally you should at least find out what appropriate dress is in the country you're visiting. What some Westerners wear in India is pretty awful, then they wonder why they're treated badly.  Not to mention that makes things that much harder even for those of us who are dressed appropriately. |

All in all, I completely agree. 80% of the people I met in Siem Reap last time were only "doing" Angkor for a day, two tops, because it was "too expensive" or "boring" but would spend all day drinking or smoking themselves stupid and then turn around and say how much they loved 'Cambodian' (not Khmer) culture.

I'm not concerning myself with the 'experiences' others have abroad. I was noting what I observed on my own travels. Which was the theme of this thread. Or maybe you missed that part. By the by. |

It isn't the normal tourists going about their vacation as they please that constitutes the douchbaggery. It is the arrogant "authentic" travelers who do. |

I beg to differ.....the avg tourist is indeed an assclown...no way round that. But that comes more from how travel is viewed by many people than from the people themselves. |

When I go traveling, there are very few other tourists that I actually connect with. I meet a lot of wide eyed idiots who have no idea how to behave. I also meet some jaded types who think they've seen it all, but come off as douchebags.
I put this down to the fact that I live in another culture all the time, so I don't get the same feelings of novelty that other tourists do. And I don't labour under the pretense that I know it all like the jaded backpackers. I don't even like the other English teachers I meet. The best interactions I have is with the locals who aren't in the tourism industry.
Face it. We are a bunch of odd ducks.
ps. the worst tourists I ever met were a group of Bengladeshis in Vietnam. |

well...
especially if ur a western female... take care not to wear too much revealing clothes
u wont find indian dresses to be reveling, and even if indians wear western dresses, they arnt much revealing
miniskirts are catching on, but mostly they catch Grumpy sights of uncles and aunties in public places.
if ur a female, and its summer, try NOT to wear a short and just a slipon on top!
if u happen to travel in crowded places like mumbai suburban trains or buses in delhi, u knw wat to protect! |

I grew up in a place that attracts probably a million American tourists a year and I disagree... maybe it's apples and oranges since it's not a foreign country for them, but the vast majority of them act in a very rude and selfish fashion, with absolutely no respect for the locals, and certainly no apparent awareness of the region's natural beauty or interesting history. |

| Who are you people to judge and criticize tourists for taking pictures and enjoying themselves on vacation. Most of these places literally survive off tourism. Think about what you are writing. |

As for appropriate dress, you don't have to wear a necktie or fancy dress.
One nice thing in India is the Punjabi suit. It is usually made of nice cool cotton, and covers the body without being hot. It comes with a big scarf to wear over your shoulders, and to pop over your head if you are going into a temple.
I saw a couple trying to enter the Sikhs' Golden Temple in Amritsar, wearing shorts and sleeveless tops. I didn't see what happened, but if they were asked to not go in, they were probably indignantly claiming racism or ethnocentrism.
I sat with friends at South Beach (Miami) watching the tourists today. I would imagine that locals in other countries feel much like we did today- entertained by the ignorance, and a bit grateful for their contribution to the local economy. |

Goa is Kho Sarn road on motorbikes. Never have I seen more social misfits
renting mopeds Vespa's Royal Enfields, I wonder how many of these people actually hold an official drivers license in their home countries.
I met a guy with one leg on a Honda scooter and yes he lost his leg in a motorcyle accident.
Despite the fact that marijuinia is officially illegal in India the hippies in India will smoke it just about anywhere. |

Hemp is sort of illegal. Then again there are government hemp shops where you can buy it for consumption. "Special" Lassis are sold in restaurants. I wouldn't be smoking dope in Goa, but if one were brave and so inclined, a special lassi will more than do the trick- if it doesn't kill you!
While I was there my travel companion got very sick. The drivers gave him some "brown sugar". It cured him real fast! He had a great day. 
But my inclination when in any foriegn country is to not do drugs. Period. India is an acid trip when you are totally straight! |
