I just signed up for Cyworld and got this message:

What does it mean? I don't really care about joining cyworld, but I want to be able to view an old friend's webpage and send her a message...

Thanks!

O-kay....how does one become a regular member?

I just got this e-mail:

I just want to view and post a message to my friend's page...jeez. I have done this before, years ago, but apparenly one can't do that as a non-member anymore.

They'd like you to fax or email a scan of identification (stupid, I know. But, that's what they want). Your driver's license, passport, or for those in Korea, Alien Registration card should be fine.

They aren't just discriminating against non-Koreans as Koreans have to enter their national ID details to get a cyworld or nearly any other webpage registration either. It annoys me, but somehow Koreans don't seem to mind what seems to me like an unnecessary breach of privacy.

Yes, it seems most Koreans don't realize that giving up your registration number for almost everything, from credit cards to getting something as simple as an email account, is a recipe for rampant fraud. Hopefully, one day, the government one day actually realizes this, and Koreans demand not requiring to give up their number for everything that isn't tax related.
