Mid-august? I was there LATE-August last year and Hwajinpo Beach north of Sokcho was bloody crowded! Not as much as Gyeongpodae Beach on the east coast mind you, but still noisy as hell all night long: a party beach without the restaurant and minbak infrastructure, but with decent enough sand and tents and party atmosphere if you're up for that.

I personally have been more impressed with the south coast beaches than the east coast beaches for swimming and chilling, but the seoul crowd on the east coast does lend itself to crowded partying if you're up for that.

I just come from sokcho this week...

was surprised at the amount of beach there was, would be great if it wasn't all barb wired up.

Seems like a nice little town....
