my boyf & i plan on taking some well deserved R&R through thailand, vietnam, cambodia & laos - and anywhere else for that matter, when our contracts up in december.
could anyone provide a ballpark figure as to how much will go how far in SE asia.
accomodation wise, basic is fine, but not too basic
we should have at least 6000 saved between us.
any ideas? |

I lived a couple of years in Bangkok and traveled around SEA extensively. I lived on $1500 a month, on average, including airfares and hotels. That did include yearly trips home to the US, so that brought the average up. I would guess two of you could live on $2000 a month and stay pretty well including a couple of flights a month. |

Since it sounds like you will be traveling without time pressure and can pick and choose destinations and methods of travel without that pressure $1,500 per month for a couple and you will be quite comfortable indeed.
Figure about $40 a day for basic living expense and the rest for travel (transportation) expense. You can live on less if you decide to rough it some of the time. |

Fun! I've only been to Thailand (back in 2003) out of the countries you mentioned, but I know friends who've spent time in Vietnam and Cambodia. I think it's safe to say that Thailand is the most expensive country of the four, so with this in mind, when I was there, I traveled during high season (November) so everything was a little bit more pricey but not as expensive as it would've been if I had visited in December (peak season). I recall that I was there for almost 4 weeks and I spent a total of $1800 US - this included roundtrip airfare ($600) from Los Angeles, three flights on Thai Airways within Thailand and a week spent in a beach paradise indulging myself. (lol)
Other than for my last week in paradise, I stayed in guesthouses and ate and drank well every day; I traveled very comfortably. I had received personal recs for a lot of the places I stayed at and some of the guesthouses were amazing! (PM me if you want more information) Also, for two weeks I was on my own and for two weeks, my boyfriend was with me - if you'll be traveling with your boyfriend, the two of you should be able to save on accommodation.
How long do you plan on traveling for? Do you have a set time frame? Or are you just going to have a go at it until your money runs out? (lol) I hope you have a wonderful trip! I loved Thailand and I can't wait to go back to Southeast Asia! |
