For anyone who is looking for a great salon to get there hair cut and colored, I have found the place. It is called Zen and it is run by a Korean guy named Johnny that speaks great English, he spent years in England and had a salon there. The salon caters to foreigners, (I got to read the latest edition of People while I waited for my highlights), has great service, and does a wonderful job.

It is located in the Hyundae area, right off Ehwa Women's University. The number is 02 363 4253 or mobile is 010 5586 0243.

I paid $25 for my hair cut and $85 for my highlights, which came out great. I had Johnny and two assistants working on my hair and he told me to come back in a week or two for a free conditioning treatment and blow dry. He also sat down with me when I came and talked about what I wanted for my hair and offered suggestions. Really a great place. I highly recommend checking it out.

I'm glad you made it to see Johnny, Julie. Smile I second her recommendation, I've been going to him for just under a year every 2 months or so. Each haircut has been great!

Johnny is known by many, as he used to work at Headrush in Hongdae, upstairs from the now-closed Route 66. He opened his own shop with his friend.

I too agree that Zen hair is FANTASTIC!!!! They are great and do a great job. What I really liked is that its like having your hair done back home; you can talk about your problems with your hair and have a good talk with them... friendly chit chat is what I miss ....

Do you know if they take walk-ins, or is an appointment necessary?

You can just walk in if need-be, there's usually someone who can at least get you started. I highly recommend an appointment though, just in case.

DIRECTIONS:

Walk out Exit 1 of Ewha Women's University Station. Go straight, then take your first right. You will go one "block" (maybe 20 meters) and Zen is in a building on the left. It's the 5th floor (the top floor, to help you identify the building).

If you're on your way and you have trouble, you can always call Johnny or the salon and they'll help you out. Good Luck!

Do you think he has access to better color than most Korean salons? I can't seem to find the right color for my coat (see my avatar) and I keep getting these really horrible dyes from the average salon.

Yeah, Nicole I made it! Thanks for the tip!

In regards to colors and all, just give the salon a call and ask, they speak English and can answer any questions. I know he matched what I already had in my hair perfectly. You can't tell that I had my roots re done at all and my roots were way grown out, I had had my highlights done when I first came and the result was less then perfect, to put it nicely, and I have been afraid to go to anyone since, so I had about 6 months of growth. And now my hair looks great.

Well, that's amazing.
I have had too many highlighting horror stories in Korea to dare trying it again, but after hearing your story Julie I just might try again.

I have curly thick hair and have only once in my life found a good hairstylist to help me. My hair is just so difficult. I wonder, would Johnny be able to help me since Koreans have straight hair. He probably wouldn't know what to do with me. It really is hard hair to manage.

Johnny lived in London for 3 years (which is where he trained to be a stylist) so he's used to all kinds of hair non-korean. I'm sure he could help you out.

As for tipping, I always tip. It's so cheap (25,000 for a cut) anyway, but I don't think it matters if you don't. They are used to foreigners, and foreigners are used to tipping, so who I'm sure they get both.
