I always get the question, "Are you Russian?" from Koreans. I can't go into the Family Mart near my school without the guy at the counter saying, "Russian?" no matter how many times I tell him I'm not. I wouldn't normally care, but I heard that Koreans associate all Russians with prostitution. I don't dress provactively or draw too much attention to myself (apart from being blonde). What gives?

Take it as a compliment. Korean's think that Russian women are hotties.

Be careful of drunken ajosshis commenting on your Russian-ness, however. That got me in trouble a few times, and I ended up dying my hair brown because of it. Seriously.

"Russian?" = "Can I pay you for sex?"

When I lived in Yeosu (a port town), most of the blonde girls I knew had to do the same thing. It's sad, but the local population too often associate Russian women with the sex trade.

Not surprising since a vast majority are working in the sex trade. Even models and Everland workers supplement their income plying their wares downstairs... Very Happy

This is wise advice. I had a friend that was here last year and she was blonde and attractive. She had a few scary experiences with soju ridden Koreans that called her "Russian" and they tried to grab her. Fortunately, she got away both times. I'm not trying to scare you but, sadly, it happens here. It's smart advice to always stay alert at night, though.

I have Polish and Czech ancestry. I don't mind being mistaken for a Russian, but I do mind being mistaken for a prostitute. I've already had an experience with drunken Ajosshis trying to grab me. I was fortunately "saved" by 2 fellow (male) co-workers. Maybe it's time to dye my hair brown.

It's ok to be you know. You can be quite open about it here without feeling bad. I'm pretty sure you could wear your pillow case and bed sheets and people wouldn't care. They may get upset if you start burning crosses but that is another matter.
