My vote is with the staring. I've been here nearly 2 years and I still don't get it. For the most part, I try and ignore it. However, it does wear on you after a while. What was it the Elephant Man said?......."I am not an animal!!" I've enjoyed many things about Korea but that's one thing I won't miss. I'll be back home in a few months and it'll be so nice to just be an anonymous member of society walking down the street. |

I'd remove some of their Korean pride, eliminate the xenophobia and make the genders a little more equal.
Oh wait, that was more than one. lol. |

Yes, Koreans are very nationalistic, and in general, are very proud people. |
Really? Do you really think that it's pride they are expressing? |
Koreans are proud to be Korean. |
If by pride I take you to mean an unfettered admiration that exists as a matter of respect for what it sees as some Korean significance in relation to the world and world significance in relation to Korea and also a sense of shared Korean-ness across racial type and social class, then, I don't think so.
If by pride you mean a sense of exagerated importance as a reaction against a world they see to be always holding them back (playing the victim in a world where they receive no love but feel they desrve it more than any other nation) and a false sense of just how perfect Korea was prior to Japanese colonialism (a form of romancing the pre-colonial) or the fabrication that there was a "Korea" (in the sense of a people united by a subjective sense of national belonging) at all before colonialism, then I'm right there with you. |
You're making it more complicated than need be. Many Koreans are proud to be Korean. As for whether they have anything to be proud of, that's a matter of opinion and highly debatable.
A lot of Americans are proud to be American. A lot of French are proud to be French. Same goes for Koreans. Who cares whether they have a right to be proud or not? It's all subjective anyway, so what's the point in nitpicking? |

I'm not questioning their right to be proud. You misunderstand me. Rather, I'm trying to look at what lies beneath this oft repeated usage of "pride" and understand what motivates it. If we look at Korean pride acutely enough does it still resemble pride, at least how we customarily think of pride? I don't think so. It's not "nitpicking."
My question would be: what's the point in continuing to call someone proud if you suspect beneath it all they are not really proud? |

Oh yes, in a perfect world...
But then you'd be taking some of the "Korean" out of being Korean. If Koreans weren't proud, xenophobic and sexist, would they still be Korean? (lol)
And I'm only half-joking...I know a lot of Korean men who are proud to be sexist and racist. Whatever. No one is perfect...and this includes my fellow Koreans. |

I'd get rid of the annoying noob gyopos girls. Living in Irvine is nothing like being here. And yes, you are in for a shock. What, you think you understand Korea more than us just because your last name is Kim? Oh, your family is from korea? Well, hun, guess what, they left. I've probably spent more time in korea..and LA...than you have.
Get down with Confucious and chill. |

I haven't failed to understand anything.
Gyopos don't want to learn about korea? Well, that's your words, not mine.
Maybe it's not just gyopos. It's every disrespectul noob that thinks they are special. Put in some time before you go acting like an expert.
Some people are just confused. Being young and arrogant annoys me. Especially if you are going to be asking my opinion and advice. Have fun at a hagwon, or working privates for 50,000 an hour fresh of the boat. Or whatever you think you are doing today.
Whatever, I'm done. |

Are you really done? Really? Thank you.
And for the record, I just landed a job making a lot more than 50,000 won an hour...

The problem is Korea is always changing. And as for us, the young people come, the young people go. Who is still here after ten, twenty years? Less than 1%.
Hard place to make and keep friends.
pop.
