My contract says that my school will pay for a plane ticket home after I'm done, but I have another job and don't have any reason to go home between the two. I bought a ticket, planning to just get a refund for it later, but now I've been told that I have to submit my boarding pass. Is that normal?? Is there any way to get paid for my flight? Or should I give up on it?

Just how would you submit a boarding pass?

If you board the plane, you are gone and you should have had your money the day before.

Your co-teacher / whitey wrangler is a twit and an ass.

I assume that you made the mistake of telling him / her that you were staying in korea or that you did a visa transfer instead of a new visa application.

Now you have to have a temper tantrum and insist that you are leaving and you want your ticket reimbursed as per the contract BEFORE you leave.

Don't give up on it. That is about a million of your won they are pissing with. GET MAD.

You could go to the airport, get the boarding pass and then not board.

I think the point ttompatz raised is that if he has the boarding pass he should be out of the country and NOT here to give it to the co-teacher.

If he is here to turn in the boarding pass then he did not leave the country.

Same happened to me. Bastad Pubic School forced me to take a trip home I didn't really want to take. And that coordinator lady never responded to my phone messages or email.

My school said that the Education Office told them that I MUST take a trip home but I simply pointed to the clause in my contract which said that I could get the money in lieu of the trip. And that was that.

Unfortunately, my contract doesn't say I can get the money instead of a ticket. I'll know that for next time. Well, actually I've already signed my next contract and it doesn't provide any sort of airfare at all (but other benefits make up for it). Anyway, that's irrelevent and I'm rambling.

No, I can't get a refund after I get my boarding pass. I'd have to do it before the flight... which is the problem.

And, yes, my school can do this because they know that I'm staying in Korea (or coming back to Korea) because they helped me get my new job. I even asked them how they can require a boarding pass, because if I wasn't coming back... and they said, "Yes, but YOU ARE coming back!!". Suppose they have a point.

I'm tempted to just give in. My contract does specifically say that I'd get reimbursed for a ticket to the place I came from, so I really shouldn't have expected anything else. Either that, or I'll cancel the flight, tell them I lost my boarding pass, and let them either pay me or not. I'm guessing, based on our history, that they would end up paying me, but I couldn't count on it. Specially since I know longer work there, they no longer have any reason to keep me happy. Sigh...

I've had this problem before. You'll be really lucky to get cash in lieu of the ticket, and chances are your employer will see that you don't need a ticket and you won't get one. That's life, and only fair imho.

Tokki,

If the contract says they will provide airfare then that's exactly what he should get. Air FARE. It's not a plane ticket. It's money. If he decides not to go home they still owe him that airfare as stated in his contract.

Lol your avatar seems particularly appropriate. I thought the contract said 'round trip airfare'. So if he needs to go home at the end of the contract he has the return. Perhaps he should have negotiated 'cash in lieu' before he signed.
