|
|
I am working at a public high school in Gwangju. I started 5 weeks ago after working 1 year in public elementary school. I am an ESL teacher but have had nothing but problems. When I arrived they put me in the dirtiest and smallest room I have ever lived in. I could not even take my cloths off to sleet. I think I should have left then. Anyhow, my contract said I was to "assist the korean teachers or jointly have class. Every class I have completely had to manage. When a Korean teacher is there they just sit and once in a chile, after I try for 4 or 5 times, discipline a student. I protested and there was much anger. I sent a message to the vice principal about the matter thru email but have not formally given a letter, will do so next week.
They asked if I would teach an additional class after school and I agreed but the Friday before the class was to begin they told me they wanted lesson plans for 10 lessons. I was not prepared and understood they would provide the lesson plans. I worked 8 hours for free that weekend for them. The following Monday when the class was to begin we were doing testing. They had both myself and the other English teacher double test the students (something I really dont like.)We both did orals ( I didn't have to do that in the elementary school either) I had to work into my lunch for 20 minutes without pay and once again protested to my supervisor.
I think they are going try to suspend me or something. I transferred my pension to them and wont be able to work for another public school again if something happens. I think the only optin is to quit and put a protest into the ministry of labor. Can anybody think of a better solution?
Thanks |

No. Put in your notice. You could do sooo much better. SMOE is hiring new public school teachers for August.
Start with www.footprintsrecruiting.com
Good luck and better days. |

Are you the first foreigner to work there? What kind of HS is it - academic or vocational / technical?
Your story shows how important it is to check out housing and the school first. |

Don't protest...you TELL them what's what. If they show "much anger" just walk away. You're paid to teach not to listen to some jackass jawing at you
They asked if I would teach an additional class after school and I agreed but the Friday before the class was to begin they told me they wanted lesson plans for 10 lessons.
If they are not going to give you proper time to prepare tell them "You can want in one hand and spit in the other. See which fills up first."

There's nothing wrong with helping students once in a while in lunch hour or on break at least in MHO...but if that really bothers you, here's what. When the clock hits twelve, just say "see you later" and walk away and have lunch. Trust me they're not going to send the cops after you

Yes. Just do your own thing and don't let anybody tell you different. If they don't like it, they can give you a LOR and you can go somewhere else. |

| Why wouldn't you be able to work for another public school if something 'happens'? |

HI,
I thought that once you had problems with a public school and quit that no one in the public school system would ever hire you again.
You mean that I could quit this public school, and take my pension to another public school even though I have only been here for 5 weeks?
Wont they think something is wrong with me? |

It depends on the school. I think some of the school officials are
aware of how badly many teachers are treated and will certainly
understand.
I could tell by your typos that you are very upset. What should
you do? You have to go with your gut and feel good about
your decision.
They probably think you love your apartment. I agree you should
have talked about the bad apartment at the beginning.
I've found that if you wait to put your foot down then people
are more upset because then you seem unpredictable. |

Hi Fleart, sorry things are going bad for you but whatever happens I'm pretty sure that you can go to work in another PS school somewhere else. It all depends really on the circumstances but I know many teachers who have done so, even without recommendations. However, I don't know any teachers who have done so if they had a bad reputation. So I think your best bet is to make peace and just try and get a LoR. You don't have to get their recommendation just get out.
