I realize that this isn't anywhere near as bad as what happens to gays in places like Iran. But then again, when was the last time you heard anyone hailing Iran as "a shining beacon of democracy in the middle east"?

Quote:
Shas Knesset Member Nissim Ze'ev on Thursday proposed establishing "rehabilitation centers" to suppress the sexual tendencies of gay people.

The government should initiate this; these people are dangerous and we must keep an eye on them, he said as the High Court discussed whether to cancel the Jerusalem gay pride parade due to the firefighters' slow-down strike. If such a center is built, many of them will flock to it in order to help themselves.

Quote:
Apart from the suggestion to set up the "rehabilitation centers", Ze'ev said he would submit a bill that would ban gay sexual relations if he thought the Knesset would approve it.

According to him, those who would break the law would be obligated to a two-year rehabilitation period.

And who are these guys, exactly? Just a bunch of fringe clowns no one need bother worry about? Well...

Quote:
As a result of the 2006 elections, Shas has 12 seats in the Knesset and is tied with Likud for the third-highest number of seats. Following the election, Shas joined the governing coalition and holds four cabinet posts. Its current leader, Eli Yishai, is deputy prime minister.

You gotta just love religious people. If we locked up all the people who believed in this black magic bollacks most of the world's problems would be gone.

Perhaps someone should take the time to remind the Orthodox Jews which group Hitler sent to the ovens first, then maybe we would see some of that religious tolerance.

Not all, just the ones who seem to be in power these days. Imagine bin Laden and all his followers, Bush and all his followers, the Orthodox Jews of Israel who push settlements. If these three groups were in a dungeon somewhere the world would be a much better place.

Tolerance was a false value. It is over, or almost. Being tolerant of intolerance isn't tolerance. It is weakness. The 'right' side can no long be weak in the face of the intolerant nonsense of religion. Enough is enough. All humans must be free from religious meddling.

Unfortunately, there will be misery and death - and bad karmic reactions for violating laws of God - whether there is any organized religion or not.

God's rule is total, and all of us got death sentences we have to serve (multiple-life sentences in most cases...)

Totalitarianism only works if the leader is perfect. Actually, God is perfectly liberal, but our desires to enjoy matter in this world are based on illusion and lead to perpetual suffering in pursuit of illusory pleasures ...

Since there are practically no perfect leaders among religionists - or any politicians - there has to be a system of effective checks and balences to prevent various types of tyranny and fanaticism - religious or irreligious.

The framers of the U.S. Constitution, led by James Madison, set up a relatively very good sytem including vital First Amendment freedoms...

A vigilant free press also plays a key role in maintaining freedom. I'm not that familiar with the Israeli system (which obviously has major security concerns) but I think they at least have free press to help keep their governments in check...

Well, the religious Jews among the Sephardim and the European ultra-Orthodox (who are not the majority of European Jews) do not like homosexuals in large measure. I would also imagine some of the Russians do not care for them either as we saw from what happened to those Brits in that parade in Moscow. However, the Likud includes many seculars who wouldn't want to pass such a law.... I think the seculars still hold a lot of sway in Israel. Are there crazy fanatical parties in Israel?
Definitely. I mean you have some who believe in ethnic cleansing, not just tossing gays into some re-education camp.

Anyway, I think this idea of locking up gays is quite loco.... They need to be sent to some centre themselves...

God's laws? ... Well, the Ten Commandments simply convey a basic understanding of laws of God, but "Thou Shalt Not Kill" should be interpreted as not unnecessarily killing any living beings...

One of the original "lawbooks of mankind" is the Manu-samhita, detailing the duties of the various social orders (and ashramas)

An overview can be found here: http://www.veda.harekrsna.cz/encyclopedia/manusamhita.htm

Although Vedic injunctions are generally thought to be very conservative with respect to divorce, illicit sex, and homosexuality, a case can be made (albeit controversially...) even for "gay marriage" based on some ancient codes relating to gender-types... http://www.galva108.org/Tritiya_prakriti.html

Just as a start, the correct answer is "god doesn't have laws, because there is no god". But moving on.

Do not kill is an evolutionary outcome. We want to survive and so we evolved moral coded that help ensure that. Do not kill is the most simple of such codes.

The Ten Commandments eh? Have you read them?
